2005 Montevetrano, Silvia Imparato
£6950Add to BasketDubbed ‘the Sassicaia of the South’ by Robert Parker in 1995, Montevetrano is a wine that sells at a price well below its comparative quality. With a trailblazing owner, creating wines from international grape varieties that are recognisably Italian, Montevetrano has gained a cult following. Brainchild of Silvia Imperatore, who enlisted the help of her friend and top winemaking consultant Riccardo Cotarella, it’s not hard to see why the estate is so frequently likened to legend Sassicaia.
The 2005 Montevetrano is holding together very nicely. The bouquet is elegantly polished with fine aromas of pressed dark fruit, black currant and spice. Now, more than fifteen years after the vintage, the wine has come together with seamless evolution. There are no loose ends here. The dark fruit segues immediately to spice and later onto crushed mineral. That seamless quality also applies to the long and polished mouthfeel. Finishes clean and impressively long.
