2022 ‘Mariana’ Red, Herdade do Rocim

    £1375

This vibrant blend of native Portuguese grapes delivers exuberant aromas of red berries complimented by subtle spicy notes. Textured on the palate with silky tannins enveloping the fruit through to a long, delicious finish.

Herdade do Rocim is associated with the Sustainable Program of the Alentejo Viticulture. This wine is made from organically grown grapes; 70% of the vineyard is certified and the remaining 30% is in conversion. The estate is situated on the Vidigueira fault, a 30-mile long east-west facing escarpment that rises to 420 metres. The fault significantly influences the climate, trapping the cool, humid Atlantic winds, so despite its southern location, it is one of the most temperate sub-regions in the Alentejo. These cooling and humid influences descend at night, creating diurnal temperature differences which extend the ripening period; with the warm days concentrating the flavours in the grapes, while balancing natural acidity is retained during the cool nights. The soils are of granitic and schistous origin. The water level in the soil is rich and superficial, nourishing the vines during the warm summers.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2018-estate-red-soito/">2018 Estate Red, Soito</a> Red Wine

    2018 Estate Red, Soito

    £2395

Made from Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Tinta Roriz and Jaen grape varieties, this wine has a red colour with brick-like nuances and a complex and delicate aroma, with notes of ripe red fruits, cassis and blackberries, combined with a light touch of black pepper, cocoa and vanilla. The palate is full and round, with a well-structured body and the presence of well-mannered tannins, good volume on the palate, high refinement and persistence. This wine was partially aged for 9 months in French oak barrels.

The Dão region is located in Beira, central northern Portugal, flanked by the mountain chains of Caramulo, Montemuro, Buçaco and Estrela, which offer protection from the prevailing winds. Within this basin configuration, there is a wide range of micro-climates strongly influenced by relatively steep valleys carved out by the Mondego, Alva and Dão Rivers and their numerous tributaries. The vineyards range from 200 to 700 metres above sea level. The warmest, driest plots lie within a triangular plateau between the towns of Viseu, Mangualde and Nelas, in which the late-ripening Touriga Nacional flourishes. The wide diurnal temperature shifts of up to 20°C, ensure the fruit is endowed with ample natural acidity. The soils are granite-dominated sands, with particles of feldspar, quartz and mica, which sparkle in the vineyards.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2021-sino-da-romaneira-quinta-da-romaneira/">2021 Sino da Romaneira, Quinta da Romaneira</a> Red Wine

2021 Sino da Romaneira, Quinta da Romaneira

    £2395

The wine presents a lively red colour. Fresh and elegant with seductive fruit, balanced and engaging with soft tannins, characteristic of this wine, which express the beauty of the Quinta da Romaneira’s wild flora.

The grapes for the Sino are sourced from various sites within the quinta, with a preponderance of Touriga Francesa and Tinta Roriz. The soils at Quinta da Romaneira are predominantly schist, with a laminated structure that facilitates drainage and allows the vine roots to penetrate deeply to reach nutrients and moisture. This type of soil is poor in organic matter, which promotes low yields per vine, favouring high quality grapes. The steep slope of the slopes also contributes to excellent sun exposure, ideal for the ripening of the grapes.

This is the first Ten-Year-Old produced on the estate and is a fitting tribute to the positive impact João has had on the estate since he started in 2009.

As with all ports, blending is the key, and Pedra Alta uses a variety of aged parcels with different levels of sweetness and acidity, including a small proportion of some really old barrels (at least 40 years old). The aim is to deliver an elegant, complex Ten-Year-Old Tawny style where the sweetness takes a back seat, and the Pedra Alta acidity provides the focus.

Serve slightly chilled as an aperitif and as a perfect accompaniment to chocolate desserts or strong cheese.

Perfect to drink now, but will gain further complexity over the next 20+ years.
