  • 2021 Chenin Blanc ‘Steen op Hout’, MulderboschWhite Wine

2021 Chenin Blanc ‘Steen op Hout’, Mulderbosch

    £1250

Mulderbosch was one of the very first producers in the Cape to ferment Chenin Blanc in barriques. The resultant wine garnered an avid following and Mulderbosch has since become synonymous with the variety.

This 2021 Chenin Blanc ‘Steen op Hout’ is a vibrant and fresh expression of Chenin Blanc. Aromas of fresh pear, apricot and subtle oak spice lead to a firm texture with a beautiful crisp line penetrating the length of the palate supporting flavours of ripe Granny Smith apples and cinnamon spice.

The fruit for the ‘Steen op Hout’ blend is sourced from vineyards in Stellenbosch, mostly on soils derived from decomposed granite, and with high gravelly clay content.  There are two Chenin Blanc vineyards at Mulderbosch: one a trellised vineyard and the other a dryland farmed bush vine block and they vary in age from five years old to 35 years old. Significantly, they are all within a range two to eight miles from the Atlantic Ocean at False Bay, and as such are strongly influenced by a maritime climate, which plays a crucial role in the ultimate wine’s freshness and poise.

  • 2020 Chenin Blanc, Ernst Gouws & CoWhite Wine

2020 Chenin Blanc, Ernst Gouws & Co

    £1250

Ernst Gouws, the jovial patriarch of the Gouws family and winemaker extraordinaire, firmly believes in the French philosophy that the quality of the wine is inextricably linked to the origin of the vineyards and its terroir. Grapes are therefore hand-harvested from site-specific vineyards around the town of Stellenbosch, which is world-famous for producing quality, fruit-driven wines.

This 2020 Chenin Blanc is a fabulous everyday wine.  Whiffs of paw-paw, granadilla, yellow- and green apples, and peaches dominate the aromatic spectrum. The crunchy acidity and slight textural mouthfeel combine with the vibrant tropical fruit characters to result in a fresh, more-ish, typical Stellenbosch style of Chenin Blanc. Lingering flavours of cling peach and pineapple on the finish.

Light and tasty, this is an ideal refreshing wine for those long al fresco lunches during the warm summer months! A perfect accompaniment to a wide array of vegetable dishes, salads and fresh seafood.

The grapes undergo a sensory analysis and are hand-harvested at the optimum maturity levels, according to the terroir and microclimate of the vineyard. They are then harvested into 20-kilogram containers, to prevent the grapes from being prematurely crushed. • 2020 ‘Orivatis’ Old Vine Savatiano, AkriotouWhite Wine

2020 ‘Orivatis’ Old Vine Savatiano, Akriotou

    £1350

Made from the native Savatiano grape, this offers a complex and aromatic bouquet of ripe peach, quince, creamy vanilla and an intriguing hint of Turkish delight. Dry with perfectly balanced freshness, intense notes of grapefruit, pepper, ginger and wild mint lead to a long and spicy finish.

The grapes are sourced from a single vineyard called ‘Plataies’, located in Plataea, a small village at the foot of the Kitheronas Mountain, in Central Greece. The vineyard is situated at an altitude of 250 to 320 metres elevation and during the autumn and winter months, cool air masses blow down from the mountains, carrying dew which refreshes the vineyard with crucial humidity. Cold winters, hot summers and long, dry autumns combine with long periods of sunshine to enable the grapes to reach excellent maturity and complexity. The Savatiano variety is suited to the hot, dry climate as it has excellent drought-resistant properties. The grapes for this wine come from old vines of 40 to 60 years, which are pruned according to the traditional Gobelet style and produce low yields of concentrated fruit.

  • 2021 ‘Mariana’ White, Herdade do RocimWhite Wine

2021 ‘Mariana’ White, Herdade do Rocim

    £1375

A richly flavoured and aromatic wine with exuberant tropical and herbal notes complemented by a lovely citrus freshness on the zesty finish.

Herdade do Rocim is associated with the Sustainable Program of the Alentejo Viticulture. This wine is made from organically grown grapes; 70% of the vineyard is certified and the remaining 30% is in conversion. The estate is situated on the Vidigueira fault, a 30-mile long east-west facing escarpment that rises to 420 metres. The fault significantly influences the climate, trapping the cool, humid Atlantic winds, so despite its southern location, it is one of the most temperate sub-regions in the Alentejo. These cooling and humid influences descend at night, creating diurnal temperature differences which extend the ripening period; with the warm days concentrating the flavours in the grapes, while balancing natural acidity is retained during the cool nights. The soils are of granitic and schistous origin. The water level in the soil is rich and superficial, nourishing the vines during the warm summers.

  • 2021 Sauvignon Blanc, Baleia WinesWhite Wine

    2021 Sauvignon Blanc, Baleia Wines

    £1375

Baleia is a place of whales and wonder, where wines are born from rocky limestone soil in a remote and unspoilt corner of the Cape South Coast. Here vines overcome fierce elements to create fruit with singular character and depth of flavour. Beyond evocative wine, Baleia is also about finding harmony between self, others and nature in pursuit of life’s perfect equilibrium.

This Sauvignon Blanc is lovely and juicy with tropical fruits such as passion fruit and lychee dancing on the palate with saline undertones from the mineral soil in which it is grown.

Making Sauvignon Blanc one is often faced with the temptation of making very upfront and unnuanced wines that lack a sense of place. Baleia has chosen to take the road less travelled by choosing texture and minerality from the site to portray the beauty of the terroir.
