  • Pedro Ximénez San Emilio Solera Familiar, Bodegas Lustau, 375ml Dessert Wine, Fortified, Port & Dessert Wine

Pedro Ximénez San Emilio Solera Familiar, Bodegas Lustau, 375ml

    £1675

The sherries of Lustau are iconic and represent the best of the best.   This Pedro Ximenez is one of our favourites.

To make this wine Pedro Ximénez grapes are laid out in the sun after picking until they are practically raisins. After that the fermentation starts slowly and is halted to maintain all the natural sugars.  The resulting wine ages for 12 years in contact with the air in Jerez de la Frontera.

In the glass it has a deep mahogany colour with iodine hues on the rim. The wine’s tears reflect its great density. Aromas of dried fruit (prunes, apricots, figs). The palate is very sweet, velvety and soft whistle being intense and flavoursome, An extremely long finish where sweet and roasted coffee flavours return.

Serve at 10 – 12oC.  Serve with rich desserts, cakes and pastries, or pour over vanilla ice cream. Perfect companion to for strong blue cheeses. Ideal as a digestive.

    £1695

The Castaño family owns over 410 hectares of vineyards in the Yecla DO in south-eastern Spain. 80% of these vineyards are planted with the native Monastrell variety. The grapes for the 2015 ‘Coleccion’ were harvested from 70-year-old Monastrell vines and 32-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon vines, planted at 750 metres above sea level.  Dark and intense in colour, this wine is complex on the nose, with ripe black fruit aromas, notes of roasted coffee and chocolate. • 2018 Tempranillo de Laderas, Badiola Red Wine

    2018 Tempranillo de Laderas, Badiola

    £1695

Badiola is the creation of 2 Masters of Wine, Andreas Kubach and Sam Harrop along with txakoli producer Gorka Izagirre.   Andreas and Sam along with Winemaker Tao Plantón craft modern Rioja wines with an emphasis on-site rather than how long it has aged in an oak barrel.  The winemaking philosophy is to obtain very pure, fresh and well-textured wines that reflect their origin.

The 2018 Tempranillo de Laderas has pure and precise aromas of cherries and red berries are layered with herbal notes of thyme through to a textured palate. This wine shows an excellent balance between fresh natural acidity, fruit concentration and firm, but fine-grained tannins.

‘Laderas’ means hillside and this wine takes its name from the hillside vineyards on which the grapes are grown. The fruit is carefully selected from over 300 parcels that are situated on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria, in Rioja Alavesa. The average plot size is just 0.3 hectares and the average age of the vineyard is approximately 50 years, but some of the vines are significantly older, producing low yields of concentrated juice. The Gobelet trained vines are planted in limestone soils, resulting in elegant wines that are fresh, precise and age-worthy due to the balancing acidity.

  • 2019 El Vínculo Crianza, Familia Fernández Rivera Red Wine

2019 El Vínculo Crianza, Familia Fernández Rivera

    £1695
The name El Vínculo, meaning “union” or “link,” symbolises both the connection that the winery forms between the two Castile regions (Castilla La Mancha and Castilla y León) and a commemoration of the namesake wine cellar owned by the grandparents of the family company’s newest generation.
The El Vínculo Crianza is made from a thicker-skinned variety of Tempranillo indigenous to the La Mancha region, called Cencibel sourced from vineyards with an average age of 50 years. After fermentation, the wine was aged for 24 months in American oak barrels and then 6 months rest in the bottle. Expressive, concentrated aromatics on the nose with ripe fruit such as blackberries and plums coming to the fore against a subtle backdrop of liquorice, one of Tempranillo’s typical characteristics. This is a wine that has body with fine-grained, well-integrated tannins. Nice volume on the entry to the palate with ripe tannins, a round mouth-feel together with a very good length of flavour revealing hints of black fruit, some spice and vanilla.

  • 2018 Quinta de Quercus Red Wine

    2018 Quinta de Quercus

    £1775

Quinta de Quercus winemaker Sam Harrop produces single vineyard and parcel wines from 44 hectares of high-altitude, sustainably grown vineyards in central Castile.  This 2017 Quinta de Quercus is a single-vineyard wine made from the hillside plantings of 30-year-old Tempranillo.

In the glass, it has intense aromas of ripe blackberries that are enhanced by subtle herbal notes and refined layers of oak spice and clove. Full-bodied and concentrated, yet juicy and vibrant, this wine delivers a beautifully textured palate of velvety, finely-knit tannins and a precise, long finish.   This wine is age-worthy and will drink very well into the late 2020s.

The grapes are grown in a single parcel called Viña Ocaña, which is the oldest vineyard plot on the Quinta de Quercus estate. Situated at 800 metres above sea level, the altitude imparts a distinct freshness to the wine. The warm days are tempered by cool nights and this temperature difference helps to retain the acidity in the grapes balancing the concentrated flavours.

  • 2022 Souson, Ailalá Red Wine

    2022 Souson, Ailalá

    £1850

This delicious wine is the concept of winemaker Inma Pazos and sommelier Miguel Montoto and is one of the most interesting and delightful Spanish wines we stock. Others think so, too, as Mundus Vini awarded it a Gold Medal in 2024, and James Suckling gave it 92 points.

An aromatic and complex expression of the Sousón variety, with notes of cherry, cinnamon, lilac, violet and wild red berries through to a rounded palate with a savoury touch.

The grapes come from the Esposende and Gomariz estate vineyards in the Avia River Valley, which are located in the D.O. Ribeiro within the Galicia region of Spain. The D.O. is located between the Rias Baixas to the west and Ribeira Sacra to the east. The vines for this wine are planted around Esposende and Gomariz municipalities on a combination of terraced plots known as socalos, and sloped plots orientated to maximise exposure to the sun. The soils in the region are granitic sands, known locally as sábrego, which warm up quickly and retain the heat. The region is greatly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean with relatively high rainfall and humidity, although its inland location shelters it from the impact of Atlantic storms. High levels of sunshine allow the grapes to reach excellent maturity levels, however the characteristic high acidity from the cooler influences, results in wines of great balance.

  • 2023 Treixadura ‘Expresion’ , Pazo do Mar White Wine

2023 Treixadura ‘Expresion’ , Pazo do Mar

    £1895

An aromatic and full-flavoured wine with pure aromas of white orchard fruit and lively citrus notes. Elegant, with a creamy, luscious texture and a lovely crisp, fruity finish.

The aromatic Treixadura variety is a local variety of the Ribeiro region. This slow-ripening white variety can be sensitive, so site selection is paramount. The Pazo do Mar Treixadura vineyard is a testament to this: the grapes for this wine come from the Torre do Olivar vineyard, a viticultural site that dates back to the Middle Ages. In 2002, the vineyard was replanted with the current Treixadura vines. The vineyard sits at an elevation of 150 metres above sea level on a meander of the Miño River, which has a moderating influence on the vines, as they have been oriented to encourage maximum exposure to the sun. The soil is sedimentary with slate components, which retains the warmth of the day and radiates it at night, as Treixadura needs warm soils for optimum quality.

  • 2020 Rioja Tinto, Bodega Alegre Valganon Red Wine

2020 Rioja Tinto, Bodega Alegre Valganon

    £1895

Winemaker Oscar Alegre is at the forefront of a revolution in Spain. “Traditional Rioja is actually only 150 years old, driven by French influence at the end of the 19th Century – but Alegre Valgañon are among those championing a return to the much deeper roots of the region, making wine as it was before Phylloxera. Oscar and his wife Eva make gorgeous, sculpted Rioja from old plots of vines in the shadow of the Obarenes Mountains which are some of the highest and coolest in the region, yielding wines that are refined and aromatic.  Their vineyard plots are managed meticulously and they favour whole bunch fermentation, long macerations and ageing in large, neutral barrels.

In the glass this 2020 Rioja Tinto is silky smooth with a freshness and lightness of touch to it’s crunchy red, mineral tinged fruits.  Garnacha adds a little bit of weight but overall the wine is wonderfully silky and elegant with terroir and fruit shining through rather than oak.
