  The palate is fresh and lively with clean crisp acidity complementing the vibrant fruity flavours. The palate has very good extension and ends clean and bright. This is a restrained style of Australian Chardonnay.

  2023 16 Hectares Chardonnay, Cape Mentelle

  The “16 Hectares” range pays homage to the estate’s original Wallcliffe vineyard, spanning 16 hectares of coastal, gravelly soils.  It is wild-yeast fermented, with approximately a third aged in new French oak barrels (500L), followed by a year of maturation that balances oak texture and purity of fruit.

  In the glass, this Chardonnay engages the senses with a beguiling mix of citrus, lime zest and golden delicious apple complemented by lemon curd, pie pastry, and a soft overlay of toasted oak. Nuances of jasmine, jasmine blossom, and toasty almond further enhance its aromatic complexity. On the palate, it is both refined and focused: vibrant acidity drives a juicy core of white stone fruit and cucumber freshness, while a creamy texture melds with delicate hazelnut and oatmeal biscuit notes. The 2022 Shiraz is crafted using minimal intervention: grapes are wild-yeast fermented and meticulously managed to preserve varietal purity while allowing each terroir parcel to express itself.

  In the glass the wine has mineral aromatics with background savoury flinty notes. The fruit is in the fresh white pear spectrum with perhaps some citric elements. The palate is vibrant and light. The old vine depth of fruit provides a complexity not seen in most Chardonnay – there is always more to find in the wine without it being overworked or over-blown. This is a beautiful wine with depth of flavour and texture that will stand up in a fine dining situation.

  In the glass, the aromatics are deep and complex consisting of a mineral blackcurrant core with touches of anise, bay leaves and dark chocolate. Rich elements of rosemary, spearmint and moist forest floor reveal themselves as the tightly wound profile gently unfurls.  The palate has a powerful rush of cocoa powder, with dark forest berry fruits of blackcurrant and mulberry, peppered with notes of spiced ginger and caramel toffee. The seamlessly integrated palate of powdery tannins frame the perfectly weighted earthiness and fruit, giving a long texture that harks of the saline coastal influence.
