    2018 Peninsula Shiraz, Paringa Estate

    £2800

This is fabulous cool climate shiraz, that is achingly drinkable and great value for money.   The Peninsula label represents the first tier in the Paringa Estate range and are sourced from the Estate managed vineyards in Red Hill, and from a few other carefully selected vineyards around the Peninsula. These wines are an exceptional expression of the Mornington Peninsula style, with an emphasis on lively fruit.

In recent years Paringa has renewed its focus in ensuring the Peninsula range over-delivers on quality and we love the quote from the great James Halliday: “The quality of these wines are often equal to many other vineyards best”

In the glass, a bouquet of spicy blackberry fruit along with lifted floral viognier aromatics lead onto a fruit-driven palate of black fruits, black pepper and fine-grained tannins and silky texture.  A medium-bodied wine with texture and power but with a fineness that reflects its cool climate origin.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2020-estate-chardonnay-paringa-estate/">2020 Estate Chardonnay, Paringa Estate</a> Wine Republic Heros White Wine

    2020 Estate Chardonnay, Paringa Estate

    £4200

The Estate series from Paringa is a step up from the Peninsula wines and represent the unique Paringa “style” upon which their reputation has been built.   Expressive aromas of lemon sherbet, white peach, and hints of struck match, lead onto a racy palate. Vibrant fruit flavours are framed with crisp acidity which gives the wine a long, linear finish.

The fruit for this wine came from the ‘Estate’ vineyard, and the Callanan’s Road vineyard. The fruit comes from low-yielding vines, some of which are over 30 years old. They are grown in the typical red volcanic, iron-rich soil known as Ferrasol. The vines are sustainably cultivated, respecting the balance of the soil and the biodiversity of the environment.

    2016 Estate Shiraz, Paringa Estate

    £4900

In 2007 James Halliday awarded Paringa the title of ‘Best Winery in Australia’, not a bad effort for former school teacher Lindsay McCall who heads up the operation. McCall was one of the early pioneers in Mornington, who boldly experimented with different styles and possibilities in the region and quickly earned himself an impressive reputation, despite his humble beginnings as a teacher. He was the first to recognise the potential of the Mornington Peninsula for Australia’s favourite grape – Shiraz, and thank God he did. The result is the exact wine we have today, a spicy, dark, cool-climate Shiraz. Elegant and refined, a testament to the efforts of an exceptionally gifted winemaker.

In the glass, aromas of black pepper, blackberry and plum waft invitingly and lead the way into a flavoursome palate, which is savoury and textured. Fine-grained tannins give outstanding structure, balance and palate length. This is an excellent Paringa Shiraz that can be enjoyed young with food but will also cellar well for the next 20 years.

A gently-spoken man with a background in finance and IT, in 2002, he finally acknowledged the fact that his true passion lay in wine. Despite his origins in New South Wales, he simply couldn’t get enough of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and would travel down to Victoria to immerse himself in Australia’s heartland of these noble varieties. In 2003, he visited one of his favourite small wineries on Mornington Peninsula and was delighted to discover that it was for sale. Without a moment’s hesitation, he snapped it up, and so began Martin’s journey with Ten Minutes by Tractor.

The Pinot Noir vines are aged between 15 and 22 years; six clones are planted each with subtle characteristics which impart complexity to the resulting wine. The soil is a deep red volcanic clay that allows dry farming, without irrigation. Founder, Lindsay McCall, still tends to the vineyard characterised by its distinctive Lyre or ‘U’ trellis system which sits on an elaborate steel frame assembly.
