2022 Cabernet Franc ‘Eggo Franco’, Zorzal

    £2195

Zorzal is an Argentinian boutique winery that is located at the highest point of the Uco Valley. Hailed as one of the most exclusive and well-regarded areas for viticulture in Argentina, the terroir is revealed in the Zorzal wines through a respectful, non-invasive winemaking process that puts austerity before exuberance and fruit before wood.

A fine example of Cabernet Franc, this wine shows extraordinary aromatic purity, expressing white pepper, green pepper and spicy notes highlighted by mineral overtones. The juicy fruit on the palate is textured and leads to a long, satisfying finish

The grapes are grown in a specifically limey patch of a plot in a drip-irrigated single vineyard in Tupungato, Gualtallary. Gualtallary is situated at 1,350 metres above sea level in the highest vine growing zone at the foot of Tupungato volcano, one of the highest peaks in the Andes. This zone is characterised by its combination of altitude, alluvial soils, sunny days, low rainfall and wide temperature ranges. The diurnal temperatures here oscillate between 35°C and 17°C, creating long, slow ripening periods, concentrating the flavours in the fruit with balancing acidity.

    2019 ‘Altitude 1350’, Doña Paula

    £2295

This complex blend of Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Casavecchia is made grapes picked at an altitude of 1,350 metres above sea level hence the name ‘Altitude 1350’.  It is one of a trio of Dona Paula wines focusing on the altitude of unique and exceptional vineyards.  The other 2 being ‘Altitude 969’ and ‘Altitude 1100’.  All three are exceptional and available from us.

In the glass Altitude 1350 is a complex, beautifully balanced red wine with spicy and floral notes from the Cabernet Franc and vibrant red fruit notes from the Malbec. Elegant and well-structured with polished tannins which give a long, persistent finish.

The addition of Casavecchia, an extremely rare red grape variety from Campania in Italy, is particularly unique and interesting as Casavecchia has high levels of anthocyanins which impart its wines with deep colours and strong, supple tannins.

The grapes for Doña Paula 1350 come from 2 blocks (No10 and No7) of the Alluvia vineyard located in Gualtallary at 1,350 meters above sea level.
