Mittnacht Frères1989 Gewurztraminer ‘Pleiades’ Selection de Grains Nobles, Mittnacht
Alsace, FranceVintage: 1989It is made from the Gewurztraminer grape variety, known for its aromatic and floral characteristics. The wine falls into the category of Selection de Grains Nobles, which indicates that it is made from individually selected, botrytized grapes with high sugar concentration. The wine pours a medium amber in the glass. The nose is expressive, featuring aromas of apricot, saffron, tinned peaches, marmalade, and honey. Surprisingly, the palate isn’t as cloying as expected. It is fairly lively and perceived as medium plus sweetness, which has mellowed with age. While it lacks non-fruit complexity, botrytis, or varietal character, it remains a nice wine.
Notable AwardsRobert Parker 95pts: “The 1989 Gewurztraminer Selection de Grains Nobles has leafy/minty, apricot, fruit cake, dried and candied fruit aromas, with some spicy/white pepper aromas. Highly elegant, intense, and sweet but elegant and balanced, the wine is very powerful, intense, rich, long, very complex, and with strength and length. A fiery SGN.”

The Mittnacht family has been making wines of high expression since 1963. Today, it is Marc Mittnacht, son of André, his wife Paule, and his son Pierre who work the 11 hectares of vines spread over the best terroirs of Hunawihr and Ribeauvillé. For more than 20 years, the vineyard has been managed in Organic and Biodynamic Agriculture. The estate adopts an environmentally-friendly approach, respecting the natural cycle of the vines and their soil.
For over 20 years, Domaine Mittnacht Frères has been committed to Organic and Biodynamic Agriculture. They respect the natural cycle of the vines and their soil. The vineyard is certified both Ecocert and Demeter. Their approach involves avoiding synthetic chemicals such as herbicides, fertilizers, and insecticides. Instead, they allow the natural flora and fauna in the vineyards to thrive. They create their own compost and use specific biodynamic preparations tailored to the plant’s needs. This holistic approach ensures healthy products, allows the vines to defend themselves naturally, and preserves the unique terroirs of the Alsace Appellation d’Origine Protégée.
The biodynamic calendar guides their work in the vineyard and cellar. Different days are associated with specific activities: root days, fruit days, and key wine-related processes (such as racking and bottling). Tisanes and decoctions of plants like nettle, willow, and horsetail are used in conjunction with minimal doses of Bordeaux mixture or sulfur flowers.
