  2021 Cabernet Franc ‘TH’, Undurraga

  Head winemaker Rafael Urrejola has spent a great deal of time understanding the diversity of Chile’s vineyard sites; the result is the emblematic ‘Terroir Hunter’ range.

  In the glass this Cabernet Franc has an intense ruby red colour and great clarity, it expresses fresh aromas of black fruits such as blackberries, blueberries and blackcurrant mixed with floral tones such as violets. On the palate it is fresh, intense and elegant, firm tannins, with a fruity and unctuous medium palate. The finish is long and persistent.

  The Cabernet Franc grapes were sourced from a selected vineyard planted exclusively for this range in Catemito, in the Valle de Maipo. The daily temperatures during the summer are lower in this area than in the rest of the Valle de Maipo, decreasing substantially in March and April, providing the ideal conditions for the tannins to ripen completely and to ensure that the fresh aromas and flavours are preserved. Catemito is located on an alluvial terrace which was formed in the Holocene period, approximately 10,000 years ago.

  2014 ‘Cariñena’ Huaso de Sauzal, Bodegas El Viejo Almacén de Sauzal

  Renan Cancino is one of Chile’s most sought-after viticulturists, and while he has made his name for tending vines, his wine production under the Huaso de Sauza brand is also turning heads. Cancino is a natural winemaker whose philosophy is making wines how they were always made historically in Chile – naked. Everything is done the traditional way here: vines are worked by hand, the vineyards are worked by draft horse, and there has never been any use of irrigation or chemicals.

  Cariñena is made from Carignan grafted onto free-standing País rootstock on granitic soils in the town of Sauzal.  Cariñena is a rustic wine with expressive aromas of violet, rose petal, oak, smoke and mushroom.  The palate is brimming with flavours of cherry, strawberry, raspberry, liquorice and anise.   The finish is mouthwatering, like a mountain breeze!

  “I have never seen such an artisanal and true to tradition way of making wines. The nose is a clean, focused and pure expression of the grape, with the violets and earthy, slightly rustic aromas. No sulfur is ever used at the winery, yet the wines are so clean and pure that it’s hard to believe. The palate is medium-bodied with some earthy, slightly grainy tannins and with great acidity.   Sourced from estate vineyards nestled in the Alto Maipo, where the cooling influence of the Andes meets warm valley sun, the 2017 Finis Terrae is a wine of depth, structure, and elegance.

  In the glass, it is richly aromatic, offering layers of ripe blackcurrant, plum, and cherry, intertwined with notes of cedar, tobacco, graphite, and a subtle touch of mocha and vanilla from well-integrated oak ageing.  On the palate, it is full-bodied and polished, with concentrated dark fruit flavours framed by fine-grained tannins and a vibrant acidity that provides lift and longevity. The texture is smooth yet structured, with a long, refined finish marked by hints of dark chocolate, spice, and forest floor.

  The Chaski Petit Verdot from Perez Cruz is a superb example of this little known grape variety. This a complex and elegant wine with delightful soft tannins which lead to a lovely spicy flavour and herbaceous aromas. The finish is long and persistant and it’s subtle flavours will last and linger in the mouth. As you would expect Perez Cruz Petit Verdot is a superb match to steak, other rich red meats and spicy lentil dishes.

  The word “Chaski” refers to the ancient Inca for “messenger,” and in fact celebrates an actual Incan “chaski” trail, marked by stone-lined paths as can be seen on the label, that is found on the family property.

  2013 Pinot Noir Lot 21, Viña Leyda

  Lot 21 Pinot Noir is a complex and elegant wine, with delicate aromas of strawberries, red cherries, orange peel and herbs with a subtle earth complexity. The first impression on the palate is of fresh, sweet red berries. The middle palate has nice volume with concentrated cherry flavours and soft ripe tannins that cover the entire tongue. The finish is bright and lingering.

  This wine is made by Viviana Navarrete the exceptionally talented winemaker behind Leyda, from estate vineyards in the Leyda Valley. Here the maritime influence and summer breezes create an extraordinary environment for Burgundian varieties like Pinot Noir.  This special wine comes from a selected parcel where all labour is performed by hand, by women only and vine by vine. Clusters are carefully selected to keep yields extremely low. Less than 1.75 pounds of fruit is produced by each plant.

  A signature blend of all the varieties on the VIK estate, the red fruit notes from the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot intermingle perfectly with the black fruit and spice of the Carmenère, all underpinned by a mineral hint of Cabernet Franc and the violet nuances of Syrah.

  Situated within the valley’s interior, the vineyard benefits from a rich tapestry of diverse terroirs and microclimates. Each parcel features unique exposures, tempered by coastal breezes, which intricately crafts complexity in the resulting wines. The vineyards are planted across 12 small valleys, totalling 327 hectares. More than 6,000 soil analyses were conducted to match clonal selection of rootstock and varieties. The soil types include colluvial, alluvial, sand, clay, and gravel stone, each imparting a distinctive characteristic to the resulting blend. Milla Calla incorporates all the varieties on the estate. The vines are planted in the Colchaguilla, La Feria, Boqueron plots at high density, of 10,000 vines per hectare, with six bunches per vine. 50% of the vineyards are massale selection and 50% are from carefully selected clones. The vines are sustainably cultivated and hand-harvested at optimum maturity.

  The grapes for this wine were carefully selected from small plots. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from estate vineyards planted in the early 1990s, in Pirque and Los Morros, in Alto Maipo. The Pirque vineyard contains alluvial soils with medium composition with a high level of stone content, whereas Los Morros consists of soils of colluvial-alluvial origin. Both soil types have medium to low fertility, good depth of 1.5 to 2 metres and good drainage; ideal conditions to produce wines of character. The Carménère grapes come from an estate vineyard in the Colchagua Valley planted in the mid-1980s. The clay loam soil textures are dominant which is ideal for this variety as they retain soil moisture ensuring optimum and prolonged ripening. The Carignan grapes come from a rain-fed vineyard planted in 1958, in the Maule Valley. It contains soils with clay texture, high quartz content, subsoil of granitic origin and good drainage.

  Lota is the flagship wine of Cousiño Macul, an emblem of heritage, precision, and exceptional terroir. Sourced from the winery’s most treasured parcels, including Cabernet Sauvignon vines planted in 1932, this wine represents the pinnacle of the family’s winemaking tradition. These ungrafted vines are descendants of original French cuttings brought to Chile in the 1860s and grow at the foot of the Andes, 600 meters above sea level, in rocky, loamy soils that yield naturally low quantities of intensely concentrated fruit.

  Created by Alex and Carrie VIK, the vineyard was born amidst the foothills of the Andes mountains, within the Millahue Valley, named “Lugar de Oro” or “Golden Place” by the native Mapuche people: 4,300 hectares of astonishing Chilean wilderness where they planted over 327 hectares of vines. Holism is the concept that best reflects the VIK spirit. It is the perfect union of humans and nature as an integrated whole. The holistic wines are the result of a magnificent, dynamic terroir and the best winegrowing and winemaking techniques and practices, coupled with superlative work to protect and enhance the environment, concern for human and social development, and a focus on art and architecture.   A full-bodied blend imbued with tightly layered tannins giving a velvety texture and notes of blackberry, earthy notes, mushroom, graphite and herbal hints of sage. Delicious and long with chocolatey tones on the everlasting finish.

  STONEVIK is a natural wine created in nature by nature. A blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carménère from vineyards where the best holistic, organic and biodynamic practices were used.

  The grapes were fermented in toasted oak barrels with the Barroir method (with oak fallen from the property) for a period equivalent to a lunar cycle. The wine is then aged in handmade amphorae made by artisans using the same clay as VIK’s terroir. A total of 7 amphorae, 3 in honour of the universe and 4 in honour of the earth, aligned according to astronomical principles. The amphorae are semi-buried in the highest peak of VIK Park, over 1,000 meters above sea level, surrounded by centenary oak trees, in a sector VIK call “La Roblería”. It is there where STONEVIK lies under the wisdom of the forest and where, in each summer solstice, nature gives us this exceptional wine.

  2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Gold Reserve, Carmen – 3000ml/Jeroboam

  This single-vineyard, ultra-premium, ultra-rare jeroboam of Vina Carmen’s Gold Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was imported by us many years ago along with a jeroboam of 2004 and has with its sibling been in our cellars ever since.   Yes, the label is slightly battered but the levels are perfect and it is a magnificent celebration drink!    As with all top end Cabernet Sauvignon it has the ability to age very well and the winemaker suggested a maturity date of 2025 for this vintage and wine.  The fact it is a Jeroboam should add another 5 years to that!    We recently opened a magnum of both the 2004 & 2005 and the wines were sensational.

  This 2005 is brimming with ripe berries, espresso, chocolate syrup and cassis with sweet, exotic spice aromas. Velvety on the palate with dense berry and mocha flavours, the tannins are powerful but ripe and the linger is substantial.  A family celebration bottle if ever there was!
