  2021 Botmaskop, Delaire Graff

  Delaire Graff is one of the leading wine estates in South Africa and is situated on the top of the Helshoogte Pass in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation. It looks down on the Banghoek Valley, and the West and East facing sides of the majestic Simonsberg.

  This 2021 Botmaskop (see below) is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon & Cabernet Franc with a splash of Petit Verdot and Merlot.  It is an opulent and polished blend with classic aromas of cassis and spice leading to a structured palate with liquorice and blackberry flavours and enveloped by fine, lingering tannins.

  Botmaskop 2021 has a recommended ageing potential of between 10 and 15 years. Over time, the wine develops in character, with beautiful tannins and rich aromas of autumn leaves and cedarwood.

  The namesake of this wine is the historic mountain peak upon which Delaire Graff Estate is situated. Originally named Bootmanskop, meaning ‘Boat Man’s Peak’, the picturesque Botmaskop mountain, with its expansive views over the Cape Peninsula and the Atlantic Ocean, served as the lookout point for the Huguenots who had settled in nearby Franschhoek. From this vantage point, sailing ships entering Table Bay harbour 50 kilometres to the west were easily seen.

  2020 ‘Gouverneurs Reserve’, Groot Constantia

  Groot Constantia is the oldest wine estate in South Africa and has a remarkable history including having King Louis Philippe of France as there best customer!   Today they make exceptional wines in a sub-region of the Western cape called Constantia which is near Cape Town.

  Groot Constantia’s flagship red shows beautiful complexity on the nose, with ripe, rich flavours of blackcurrant, dark chocolate and graphite, enriched by notes of cinnamon and cedar wood from the generous use of new oak. The black fruit and sweet spice follow through to the palate and the firm structure promises excellent ageing potential.

  2011 Chateau Grand Pey Lescours

  With its red colour with purplish tints, this Chateau Grand Pey Lescours will give you a lot of pleasure. Very fragrant, it is adorned with notes of black fruits and undergrowth. The 70% Merlot gives this wine a wonderfully soft plushness. Flavours of black cherries and blackberries and bramble fruit. The remainder of the blend is Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, which adds structure and and earthy complexity. A true classic.    It will perfectly accompany rich pies, red meat dishes (lamb, coq au vin, etc.) but also white meat (duck with orange, for example).

  2018 Le Relais de Durfort-Vivens, Chateau Durfort-Vivens

  This is the 2nd wine of Chateau Durfort-Vivens and is from the Margaux region of Bordeaux.  A refined and multi-nuanced Margaux wine with intense aromas of cassis and blackberries, with a well-structured body, polished tannins and delicate layers of oak.   Interestingly this wine was aged in Amphora.  The whole property has been biodynamic since 2016.

  2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, Inglenook

  Founded in 1879, Inglenook is one of Napa Valley’s most historic and revered estates. Under the visionary stewardship of filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola since 1975, the estate has been meticulously restored to its former glory, with a focus on producing world-class, organically farmed wines from its Rutherford vineyards.

  The 2016 Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon is a masterclass in balance and varietal purity. Aromatically precise, it opens with vibrant notes of ripe black cherry and blackberry, complemented by subtle hints of garrigue, lavender, thyme, and bay leaf that add depth and intrigue. The palate is finely tuned and seamless, with polished tannins and a supple texture that carries layers of dark fruit, cassis bud, and a whisper of savoury herbs. Oak is impeccably integrated, supporting the wine’s structure without overwhelming its elegance. The finish is long, fragrant, and composed, a hallmark of both the vintage and the estate’s restrained, classical approach. This is a Cabernet of remarkable finesse and ageing potential, offering a refined expression of Inglenook’s historic vineyards.

  1999 Chateau Haut-Brion Premier Cru Classe

  The 1999 Château Haut-Brion is intensely aromatic, rich and concentrated. A higher than usual Merlot content (60%) has resulted in a luscious, perfectly honed Haut-Brion with elegant mineral aromas and a unique complexity. Its strength lays in the finish, which is surprisingly long.

  We recently (May 22) opened a bottle and were bowled over.   This is a monumental 1st growth from a supposedly unfashionable year, we tasted it over 2 hours and watched it evolve slowly with cascading notes of blackcurrant, blueberry, black cherry, caramel and forest floor. Fresh and pure on the palate, with a richness over-laying silky tannins. The finish is extraordinary – lengthy, seductive interwoven with subtle minerality and flavours of cedar and spice. Beautifully pure and generous.
