  2021 ‘1753’ Syrah Vermentino Rosé, Château de Campuget

  A classic rose petal colour, this elegant, dry rosé shows aromatic notes of grapefruit and delicate citrus hints, through to a refreshing palate of red berry fruits with a lifted finish.

  The terroir in the vineyard is characterised by the ‘Galets’ or large pebbles that are remnants of Alpine glaciers that have been smoothed over millennia by the Rhône. These pebbles absorb and store the heat from the sun during the day and release it at night, encouraging the vines to ripen the grapes. The vines here have established a deep root system enabling them to draw the mineral elements they need to grow and providing a complexity of flavour to the resulting wine. The Mediterranean sunshine is vital to the maturation and phenolic ripeness of the grapes.

  La Pettegola’s translation has a double meaning. The first representing the name of coastal sea birds, and the second meaning, the gossiper. Think of the sweet little old ladies in the square chatting about the goings-on of town.

  The wine itself is straw yellow in colour, with intense citrus and yellow peach hints accompanied by floral and sage notes. The full structure is well balanced by the freshness leading to a persistent and fruity finish on the palate.

  The Campo alle Comete winery is located at the foot of the Castagneto Carducci hill. The oldest vines are planted around the cellar surrounded by the Mediterranean bushland. The proximity of the sea with its constant refreshing breezes plays an important role in the vine’s growth and the maturation of the fruit, where the fresh breezes impart natural balancing acidity to the sun-ripened fruit.
