  2021 Estate Zinfandel, Chateau Montelena

  Chateau Montelena is one of Napa Valley’s most iconic estates, famously catapulted to international acclaim after its Chardonnay triumphed at the 1976 Judgment of Paris. Located at the base of Mount Saint Helena in Calistoga, the estate benefits from a unique combination of volcanic soils, cool mountain air, and a long growing season, which together contribute to wines of remarkable depth and finesse.

  The 2021 Estate Zinfandel from Chateau Montelena is a masterclass in balance, showcasing the winery’s signature restraint and the varietal’s expressive character. In the glass, the wine opens with an aromatic medley of ripe blackberries, raspberry compote, and wild plum, underscored by hints of cracked pepper, sweet tobacco, and baking spices. The palate is vibrant and layered, offering bursts of red currant and brambly fruit framed by silky tannins and a bright acidity that lends freshness and lift. Notes of cedar, cocoa, and earthy minerality emerge on the long, seamless finish, reflecting the complexity of Montelena’s Calistoga terroir.

  2022 Napa Valley Chardonnay, Chateau Montelena

  This is an incredible vintage of Chateau Montelena’s flagship Chardonnay.

  In the glass it has a bright gold in colour and is incredibly aromatic, the ripeness of the vintage is most pronounced initially; melon, perfume, and orange blossom slowly give way to fresh peach, honeysuckle and apricot. There is very little overt oak influence on the nose, although it comes across subtly in the background as pie crust and toast.

  On the palate, it’s the suppleness and silky mouthfeel that strike first, although there’s abundant mango and citrus with Meyer lemon here as well. The minerality is chalky and distinct, a beautiful contrast that layers in with the acid adding both complexity and depth.

  The finish is exceptional: There’s slightly more wood on the transition to the finish, surfacing as baking spice and crème brûlée. However, they’re handily overwhelmed by notes of Asian pear, mango and pineapple— absolutely delicious. In time, expect hazelnuts and almonds to appear.

  Chateau Montelena is one of California’s most storied estates, globally recognised after its 1973 Chardonnay triumphed in the famed 1976 Judgment of Paris. Yet it is Cabernet Sauvignon that lies at the heart of the Montelena legacy. Situated at the base of Mount Saint Helena in Calistoga, the estate’s vineyards benefit from a rare convergence of volcanic and alluvial soils, diurnal shifts, and cooling breezes from the Pacific, ideal for growing structured, balanced Cabernet.

  In the glass, it reveals a deep garnet hue with violet edges, hinting at the concentration within. Aromatically intense, it opens with layers of cassis, ripe blackberry, and black cherry, interwoven with graphite, cedar, and crushed violets. On the palate, the wine is both powerful and poised, with lush dark fruit gliding over a frame of fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. Hints of espresso, cocoa nib, and dried herbs add complexity, while the wine’s mineral core and cool vintage tension carry through to a long, graceful finish.
