Unfolding across the palate are intense lime and citrus flavours backed by a steely mineral infused core. Subtle orange rind and crunchy green apple elements are also apparent. The charm of Mongrana does not take long to reveal. Well-defined aromas of ripe fruit, morello cherry, blackberry and blueberry jump out of the glass, anticipating a complex bouquet of kirsch, ivy, and pine needles, enriched by a touch of liquorice.
On the palate, it offers a juicy, fresh sip with soft tannins. The long finale is savoury, with a mineral note that persists in the mouth.

The fruit was selected and hand-picked from sites across Frankland River, Western Australia. The soils are granite, which are known for their heat retention properties and for promoting the even ripening of the berries.

The high clay content in the soil profile is well suited to bringing out the best in the Pinot Noir variety.

2020 Pétalos, Descendientes De J. Palacios
£2395Add to BasketThe 2020 Pétalos is made from 60 year-old Mencia vines that are farmed biodynamically in the Bierzo region in north-western Spain. It is the latest triumph from Alvaro Palacios, completing his triptych of Spanish vineyards (the others, of course, are in Rioja and Priorat). The intriguing Mencia grape is an early ripener, but, with old vine pedigree has a wonderful depth of colour.
In the glass Pétalos leads with lashings of complex florals: field herb, dried sage, red lavender, violet, pepper tree and rose. There’s fresh clay dirt and lissom red plum and sour cherry fruits: earthy and bright, it sums Mencia and Bierzo perfectly. The palate has nicely moderated fruit plushness in a choc-blackberry register. Petalos is soft, open, round, pretty and fresh with nice slick-but-earthy tannins and smoky minerals.
