Le Difese offers a taste of the estate behind Sassicaia immediately on release. The name is a local term for the tusks of a wild boar. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese, the wine offers bright, crunchy red cherries and damson, with a herbal lift of fennel and tea leaves and a hint of bonfire woodsmoke.

Its hedonistic charm of plum, mulberry, cassis, and blackberry is underpinned with masculine notes of English leather, cedar, tobacco, truffle, and cured meat. The palate is delicious and mouth-filling.

Adorning this solid backbone, Merlot contributes with lively red fruit and a cool note of fennel that resurfaces as the wine develops in the glass. This 2019 Classic Blend is a collaboration between Harry Hartman and Tongai Joseph Dhafana, a refugee who turned winemaker, an award-winning Sommelier, a wine judge, a philanthropist and the proud owner of the internationally recognised Mosi Wines and Spirits.
In the glass, the wine unleashes a refreshing fragrance born from sun-baked-slate, ripe berry fruit, and a peppery perfume of lavender. The wine is packed with dark fruit like blackberry, mulberry, and plum, with a cool, herbaceous gloss. Hints of rum and raisin positively points to full ripeness, joined by a notable yet balanced alcohol adding to the full, rounded texture of the wine. Clever use of oak adds structure while honouring the fruit, affirmed with a mellow and gentle pull of berry compote. Garigue aromas persist on the palate, edged with fresh acidity and supple tannin for a mouth-watering finish. A coolness lingers on the palate with a gentler aftertaste of dark, sea salt chocolate. Red WineSassicaia’s younger brother Guidalberto consistently offers incredible value from the Tenuta San Guido stable. Nicolo Incisa della Rocchetta, Tenuta San Guido’s owner, explains how Guidalberto came into being: “first of all, [there was] the desire to see what we could accomplish with Merlot, a grape that we had never used before; second, the desire to offer the consumer a wine which could be appreciated at a younger age compared to our veteran Sassicaia”.
The 2020 Guidalberto has an increased percentage of Merlot (60%) that brings added freshness to a wine that is in great shape for one so young. This the 21st vintage of Guidalberto has a profound nose that offers ripe, fragrant fruit and sweet spice. Plum, strawberry, blackcurrant and forest floor reveal the interplay of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, which constitute equal parts of the blend this year. The palate is juicy and supple, with admirable freshness given the warm vintage, framed by fine tannins. Drink 2022-2030.

The Reserve range continues to be the best of what Xanadu are able to produce in a given vintage – single vineyard or otherwise. Fruit was predominantly sourced from two mature, dry grown vineyards; Timber Creek, in the Wilyabrup subregion; and Victory Point in the Treeton subregion of Margaret River and was supplemented with a small amount of Malbec from the Stevens Road vineyard in Wallcliffe. The resulting blend from these vineyards has married beautifully, proving again that sometimes ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’.
