  • 2017 Smuggler’s Boot Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Kershaw Wine Republic Heros White Wine

2017 Smuggler’s Boot Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Kershaw

    £2100

In 2014, The Smuggler’s Boot wines were first released. The name derives from the time of trade embargoes in South Africa when growers & winemakers smuggled grapevine material into the country by hiding the cuttings in Wellington boots. The Smuggler’s Boot range celebrates that ingenuity.

This 2017 Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon is a classic white Bordeaux-style wine.   Light lotus yellow-green in colour, the nose has pristine aromas of elderflower, lemon and mandarin segments. A clean, seamless palate with vibrant fruit definition balanced with a taut natural acidity, this linear structured wine unfurls to lime, rose and pear softened by a creamy texture and lingers long after the first sip.

Its fresh, citrus profile and mineral texture make it perfect with seafood dishes, fish and spring vegetables. Winemaker Richard enjoys it with tuna sashimi with a delicate lime and ginger or Asian dipping sauce.  Oysters; asparagus and peas in a pasta primavera work well or goats cheese, white asparagus and chorizo (lightly spiced) pizza. Alternatively, a ‘posh’ fie pie or poached salmon with peas and frothy hollandaise, Cod and chips, or beer-battered haddock. For meat lovers, Gammon on the bone with broad beans in a parsley sauce. A light Thai green curry with pork or chicken (but go easy on the curry spice).

  • 2021 Hunter Valley Semillon, Brokenwood Wine Republic Heros White Wine

    2021 Hunter Valley Semillon, Brokenwood

    £2295

Established in 1970 by Tony Albert, John Beeston and wine critic James Halliday, Brokenwod has evolved from a weekend venture for hobby winemakers into one of the Hunter’s leading estates renowned for producing some of Australia’s most long-lived Semillons.

Brilliant water-like colour with a faint greenish tinge to the edges. The nose displays punchy aromas of lime zest, lemon and Granny Smith apple followed by some flinty mineral notes. Crunchy lime and green apple fruits are underpinned by crisp, lemony acidity with wet steel and mineral characters flowing onto the zesty aftertaste.

  • 2015 ILR Reserve Semillon, Brokenwood Wine Republic Heros White Wine

    2015 ILR Reserve Semillon, Brokenwood

    £5495

This is, without a doubt, one of the best Semillons produced anywhere in the world.  Consistently regarded as the definition of Semillon and it has the ability to age for decades.

At 6 years of age on release, the colour is just starting to show some development with yellow tints complimenting the green edges. Lifted lemon curd and floral notes heading to beeswax, brioche and toast. Lively lime juice, lime cordial characters are backed by a superb zesty acidity. The magic of Hunter Valley Semillon is on display with texture, fruit weight and great length from a wine that sees no oak. The ILR Reserve Semillon is only released from the best years and 2015 is a beauty. Drinking well now but will improve for many years to come.

The fruit for the 2015 ILR Reserve is sourced from Murphy’s Vineyard on Wilderness Road, on the banks of Black Creek in Lovedale.
