This natural wine is an exceptionally pure expression of Syrah. Grapes are handpicked from 25-year-old Syrah vines and fermented at low temperatures, using indigenous yeasts only. No chemical additives were added so as well as being organic, biodynamic the wine is natural. It was bottled rapidly in the year of harvest with no added sulfites and no oak ageing. What strikes you about this wine is its purity, silky mouthfeel and its intense long finish. The flavours and aromas are all classic Syrah – plums, black fruit, leather.

A bouquet of black cherries is enveloped in subtle mineral nuances and supporting oak spice. Red flowery fruit flavours dominate, with subtle slate-like minerality following through onto the elegant palate, all framed by fine tannins through to a long finish.
While inspiration has been taken from organics, biodynamics and natural winemaking practices, the Laissez Faire range could be called ‘natural wines’; Larry Cherubino likes to think of them as “post-natural” wines. Believing in healthy and sustainable vineyard practices, Larry grows all his own grapes and can account for their provenance and natural status. While copper is allowed in organic viticulture, minimal copper treatments are used here. The grapes for this wine are grown in the subregions of Frankland River and Porongurup, in the Great Southern, which are considered to be two of the most distinctive viticulture areas in Australia.

This is a completely dry white wine with spectacular intensity and a bouquet reminiscent of red apple and white peach with minerally notes in the background. White stone fruit flavours are persistent on the pallet, there is a subtle texture with tight knot acidity lingering in the background which provides length and persistence.

In the Laissez-Faire wines, there’s no added tannin, or acid, or animal fining products. There is zero sulfur used throughout the winemaking and only a minimal amount at bottling. They are using alternate varieties and blends to make naturally balanced wines. From vine to bottle, the wine takes its course, hands-free. The wines are also vegan friendly.

2014 ‘Cariñena’ Huaso de Sauzal, Bodegas El Viejo Almacén de Sauzal
£2750Add to BasketRenan Cancino is one of Chile’s most sought-after viticulturists, and while he has made his name for tending vines, his wine production under the Huaso de Sauza brand is also turning heads. Cancino is a natural winemaker whose philosophy is making wines how they were always made historically in Chile – naked. Everything is done the traditional way here: vines are worked by hand, the vineyards are worked by draft horse, and there has never been any use of irrigation or chemicals.
Cariñena is made from Carignan grafted onto free-standing País rootstock on granitic soils in the town of Sauzal. Cariñena is a rustic wine with expressive aromas of violet, rose petal, oak, smoke and mushroom. The palate is brimming with flavours of cherry, strawberry, raspberry, liquorice and anise. The finish is mouthwatering, like a mountain breeze!
“I have never seen such an artisanal and true to tradition way of making wines. The nose is a clean, focused and pure expression of the grape, with the violets and earthy, slightly rustic aromas.
