Floral violet notes are followed by an intense fruity expression of red plum, strawberry and blackberry. Full-bodied but smooth and balanced, with subtle minerality this is a classic expression of Argentinian Malbec. The wines names ‘1300’ is derived from the fact the grapes were grown in vineyards located at over 1,300 metres above sea level. The area is characterised by its wide diurnal temperature range, which produces grapes with a great intensity of colour and a distinctive aromatic expression.

Flavour-packed, balanced and very fresh, with smooth, friendly tannins. £7995Add to BasketThis beguiling Magnum of Pinot Noir from the excellent 2019 vintage has outstanding depth of colour for Pinot Noir displaying an opaque dark red-black core with a dark red-purple hue. The powerfully scented nose is dominated by ripe black cherry and dark plum aromas laced with anise over toasty cedar, light earth and spice. The palate is rich and concentrated that’s filled with dark and black cherry flavours, dark plums and anise underpinned by scorched earth and spicy cedar. Sturdy but fine-grained tannins provide some underlying muscle to the fruit. Excellent power with a long finish of dark and black fruits, anise, scorched earth and spicy cedar. Will improve for 6-8 years.

The Cuvée Barberini is a tribute to the founding fathers of the Estate and is made only in the best years from the best parcels of old vines of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. This Domaine has one of the best terroirs in Châteauneuf-du-Pape with its abundance of rounded quartzite stones, known as “Galet Roulés” terroir. These stones absorb heat during the day then radiate it at night, promoting full grape maturity. The grapes are manually harvested, once each variety has reached phenological ripeness. 2017 is classic Rhône vintage for reds and this wine is no exception. Well textured, ripe, full-bodied – delivering rich black fruits, mocha expresso and a subtle hint of smoke. Smooth on the palate with integrated tannins and a lingering finish, this is a traditional and elegant Châteauneuf.

This 2002 is made from gnarled old Shiraz vines of up to 100+ years old. In the glass, the wine displays aromas of ripe dark plum, blackberry, some meaty earth like characters, liquorice and spice showing good complexity and intensity. Rich and opulently textured the palate delivers mouth-filling flavours of ripe blackberry, liquorice and spice with a light earthy leather-like overlay. Velvet smooth tannins with long blackberry, liquorice, leather and spice aftertaste.

La Rioja Alta’s Viña Ardanza Reserva is one of the finest Reserva’s available and a benchmark for the region. Every vintage is outstanding and never fails to elicit a smile upon drinking. La Rioja Alta is the gold standard for traditional bodegas: a winery that ages their wines the old-fashioned way, meaning three years in barrel with two rackings a year, followed by three years in bottle.
The 2015 comprises 78% Tempranillo from Fuenmayor and Cenicero blended together with 22% Garnacha from the famous ‘La Pedriza’ vineyard in Tudelilla.

2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Gold Reserve, Carmen – 3000ml/Jeroboam
£25000Add to BasketThis single-vineyard, ultra-premium, ultra-rare jeroboam of Vina Carmen’s Gold Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was imported by us many years ago along with a jeroboam of 2004 and has with its sibling been in our cellars ever since. Yes, the label is slightly battered but the levels are perfect and it is a magnificent celebration drink! As with all top end Cabernet Sauvignon it has the ability to age very well and the winemaker suggested a maturity date of 2025 for this vintage and wine. The fact it is a Jeroboam should add another 5 years to that! We recently opened a magnum of both the 2004 & 2005 and the wines were sensational.
This 2005 is brimming with ripe berries, espresso, chocolate syrup and cassis with sweet, exotic spice aromas. Velvety on the palate with dense berry and mocha flavours, the tannins are powerful but ripe and the linger is substantial. A family celebration bottle if ever there was!

2012 ‘The Caley’ Cabernet & Shiraz, Yalumba – Magnum
£47500Add to BasketThis is the first vintage of Yalumba’s Cabernet/Shiraz-based flagship wine, The Caley. Named after Fred Caley Smith, grandson of Yalumba founder Samuel Smith, who was a horticulturist that had a profound impact on the development of Yalumba’s vineyards. In the early 1890’s he spent 18 months trekking across the USA, Britain, Europe, the Middle East, India and Sri Lanka, observing and reporting on scientific and horticultural developments. His detailed letters, sent home every few days, underpinned the way the vineyards were managed and laid the foundations of sustainable viticulture at Yalumba today.
At the time of blending, the winemaking team made the following tasting notes … Deep garnet red in colour, fruit is at the core of the bouquet, all red and black currants – overlaid with savoury herbs, green spices, cedar and pipe tobacco. The palate is of sophisticated precision with a refined line. Long and textured it captures the concentrated flavours and presents them with a silken grace. Under all that supple, fleshy muscle, the wine has a strong spine, structured to last and last.
The Caley has been sourced from three outstanding vineyards of the Coonawarra and Barossa regions. The Ming D block of the Yalumba Coonawarra vineyard provides 52% of the Cabernet Sauvignon of the blend. This 2.7ha plot was planted in 1992 with two clones of Cabernet Sauvignon selected for structure and depth of flavour. This block differs from the ubiquitous Coonawarra terroir, with a higher content of clay than the other blocks on The Menzies Estate. The Shiraz is sourced from the Burgemeister “Linke Block” between Nuriootpa and Angaston. Planted in 1901, these Shiraz vines run east-west and are on a single wire trellis. The soil is a red-brown earth in the Light Pass loamy fine sand family. There is also a component that comes from the 1971 Yalumba Horseshoe Block in Eden Valley.
