  Domaine des Deux Roches translates as ‘Estate of the Two Rocks’, a reference to the position of this wine estate between the two distinctive, rocky escarpments of Solutre and Vergisson, in the Maconnais area of southern Burgundy. Owners of the Domaine, Jean-Luc Terrier and Christian Collovray make this great Saint-Veran, a white that beats many Burgundies for sheer deliciousness.

  Terres Noires is a single vineyard on the south side of the landmark rock of Solutré, where limestone soils mix with black decomposed rock. One-third of this Chardonnay is matured in oak barrels for four months and it is this careful use of oak that is key to the style. It has a lovely forward and expressive peachy fruit style. A medium oaked chardonnay with lemon and butter and a touch of honeysuckle on the nose. Soft and creamy with plenty of body and texture.

  The vines are grown in the heart of the Chablis appellation, where the climate is continental. Cold winters allow the vine to rest and the sap to descend and warm summers, enable the grapes to ripen.   In the glass, the Organic Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits is straw yellow with white highlights. It has very intense bouquet perfumes with notes of citrus zest, green apple and toasty aromas of fresh brioche. The palate has excellent tension with concentrated fruit flavours that linger on the finish.

  The Hautes Côte de Nuits vineyards run parallel to those of the Côte de Nuits but are situated at a higher altitude. This wine comes from 1.05ha of organically certified Chardonnay vines. They are 35 years old on average and are planted at a density of 3,500 vines per hectare. The vineyard is east-facing and planted on limestone soil, which gives the resulting wine great freshness and fine minerality.

The vineyard has an abundance of rounded quartzite stones, known as “Galet Roulés”, which derive from the Villafranchian period.   The father and son team of Patrick and Michel Mallard jointly run the estate, which is named for Michel’s grandfather.  Michel is the winemaker and is regarded as having one of the best domaines in Ladoix, he is also the winemaker for the revered Domaine d’Eugénie in Vosne-Romanée.

  In the glass this 2017 Chorey-les-Beaune has aromas of Morello cherries, raspberry, blackberry and liquorice. In the mouth, it can be defined by its flexibility and its roundness. It tells a tale full of crisp freshness !   This Chorey-les-Beaune, is designed to be kept for many years, it is aged 12 months in 30% new wood casks (228L Burgundian tuns).

  2020 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune`Sous Eguisons`, Domaine Jean-Noël Gagnard

  Caroline Lestimé, winemaker at Jean-Noël Gagnard, decided to plant Chardonnay vines on this plot of the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, back in 2007.   The vineyard is in La Rochepot, on an embankment overlooking and bordering the western part of the Saint-Aubin appellation Le Ban. The name “Sous Éguisons” refers to the cliff above the vineyard. The cliff offers protection from the north winds, which is a significant advantage given how harsh the climate is and how bitter the spring frosts are at this altitude. The natural growth cycle of the vines is also slower and the grapes mature a full week later than at lower levels.

  The wine itself is a revelation, pure, pristine and delicious.  The matchstick mineral nose shows pure lemony fruit with a hint of florality. The palate is linear and precise with taut lemony fruit and a fine tangy, stony mineral quality. There’s just the faintest hint of spicy, toasty oak, but the real theme here is pure, vital lemon fruit with great precision and lovely integrated acidity.

  The wine has bright, crunchy red and forest berry fruits, with light spice on both nose and palate. The palate is well balanced with chalky tannins and modest depth. A supple minerality and attractive red fruit core leads to a vibrant finish.

  The fruit for this wine comes from 3.28 hectares of vineyards, including one Volnay plot by the name of ‘Les Longbois’ and various other sites within Puligny-Montrachet. The Domaine has practised organic viticulture since 1995 and was certified organic in 2012. Since 2005, it has also converted to biodynamic viticulture.
