Avignonesi

1993 Vin Santo, Avignonesi, 375ml

Tuscany, ItalyVintage: 1993

No one does Vin Santo like Avignonesi!  Crafted from only the best Trebbiano and Malvasia, the Vin Santo is dried for several months on reed mats and aged for a decade in caratelli, small 50-litre oak barrels, owing much of its character to the madre, a century-old yeast.

The 1993 Vin Santo has a glowing brownish amber colour in the glass with an inebriating nose of fig jam, roasted apricots, smoke, and tar, a sumptuous, viscous palate of dates, figs, and dried apricots. A refreshing, invigorating acidity which maintains the balance.   Enjoyment phase: now until 2033

Why we love it

This is one of the worlds rarest and greatest sweet wines.

Description

Founded in 1974, Avignonesi is the leading winery in the Montepulciano area of Tuscany. Its flagship wine, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, is appreciated by critics and wine lovers worldwide and the winery is also renowned worldwide for the unique dessert wines Vin Santo di Montepulciano and Occhio di Pernice.

Avignonesi was purchased in 2009 by Virginie Saverys, who has brought significant changes to the winery. She has worked tirelessly to convert the entire property to organic and biodynamic viticulture, with the clear goal of crafting distinct, genuine wines that fully express the singular characteristics of the Avignonesi terroir.

In 2015 Avignonesi received its organic certification and is currently waiting to obtain biodynamic certification as well. Today, Avignonesi owns 161 hectares/402 acres of vineyards spread out over the Montepulciano and Cortona appellations. All of its wines are produced with 100% estate-grown grapes. Resident winemakers, Ashleigh Seymour and Matteo Giustiniani oversee production, and under Virginie’s guidance, Avignonesi has developed a production philosophy based on balance, elegance, the brightness of fruit and a strong sense of place.

The grapes are laid out in boxes and dried for six months. The pressed must accounts for a maximum of 15% of the weight of the grapes picked. Then the must is vinified for 10 years in used wooden barrels, the so-called Caratelli (traditional oak barrels with a capacity of 50 liters) and matured in them without the barrels ever being opened during this time. The Vin Santo then matures in the bottle for a further six months.
