Glaetzer

2005 Amon Ra, Glaetzer

Barossa Valley, AustraliaVintage: 2005

Amon-Ra Shiraz is an iconic wine that epitomises Ben Glaetzer’s passion to create wines that are full flavoured, multi layered and intense but still elegant, stylish and finely balanced.

Made from exceptional old vine fruit was sourced from the famed Ebenezer sub district at the northern tip of the Barossa Valley. These old vines are between 100-110 years old.

in the glass this wine has a perfumed nose, with layers of violet, spice, liquorice and vanilla. The palate flavours are very pronounced, with a very spicy back palate. Mouthfilling flavours of black pepper, blackberry, spice, and plum overlaid with cedar. The tannins are fine, yet slightly chalky but perfectly balanced. Very long aftertaste of black pepper, spice and plum.

In Egyptian mythology, Amon-Ra is considered to be the king of all gods. The temple of Amon-Ra was believed to be the first temple to ever plant a monoculture vineyard to produce wine for the citizens of the temple.

The eye on front of the label is the all-seeing eye of Horus or wedjat (“whole one”) – a powerful Egyptian symbol of protection. It is represented as a figure with six parts, corresponding to what Egyptians regarded as the six senses; touch, taste, hearing, sight, smell and thought.

“A monumental wine, the 2005 Glaetzer Shiraz Amon-Ra Barossa Valley is from dry-grown 100-110 year-old Shiraz vines and spends 14 months in 100% new oak, of which 20% is American and 80% French (70% hogsheads & 30% barrique.) The wine offers fresh, clean aromatics of peppered blackberry and raspberry fruit, bramble, licorice and cedar. A touch of chocolate creeps in with air. On the palate it’s full bodied with a rich, broad texture that remains light and fresh, perfect balance, fresh acids and a blockbuster finish where the wine shows savory, edgy tannin.”

Description

Winemaking patriarch Colin Glaetzer established his own label to create wines he’s passionate about – limited quantities of benchmark Barossa Valley reds. Today, Ben Glaetzer carries on this family winemaking tradition and has created a small, focused portfolio of classic Barossa Valley reds which draw on traditional Barossa viticulture but are unmistakably new wave Barossa in style.

The exceptional fruit for all Glaetzer wines is supplied by a loyal group of third and fourth generation Barossa grape growers and comes from a small sub-region (1.5 sq miles) of the Barossa Valley called Ebenezer. The dry-grown vines range from 30-120 years old and are a unique part of Australia’s viticultural heritage; producing wines of great intensity and elegance.

Ben has won many awards for his efforts including; Robert M.Parker Jnr –  ‘Wine Personality of the Year’ and ‘Qantas Young Winemaker of the Year’ among others.
