Silvia Imparato

2005 Montevetrano, Silvia Imparato

Campania, ItalyVintage: 2005

Dubbed ‘the Sassicaia of the South’ by Robert Parker in 1995,  Montevetrano is a wine that sells at a price well below its comparative quality. With a trailblazing owner, creating wines from international grape varieties that are recognisably Italian, Montevetrano has gained a cult following. Brainchild of Silvia Imperatore, who enlisted the help of her friend and top winemaking consultant Riccardo Cotarella, it’s not hard to see why the estate is so frequently likened to legend Sassicaia.

The 2005 Montevetrano is holding together very nicely. The bouquet is elegantly polished with fine aromas of pressed dark fruit, black currant and spice. Now, more than fifteen years after the vintage, the wine has come together with seamless evolution. There are no loose ends here. The dark fruit segues immediately to spice and later onto crushed mineral. That seamless quality also applies to the long and polished mouthfeel.  Finishes clean and impressively long.

Why we love it

This is such a treat a 15-year-old Montevetrano – so full of life and vigour.  The mouthfeel is exquisite.

Description

Proprietress Silvia Imparato indulged in wine as a hobby until she decided to rebuild her family’s vineyards in Montevetrano, in the oft-underestimated region of Campania. She employed the skills of highly regarded winemaker Riccardo Cotarella and they have created an outstanding icon wine they decided to name Montevetrano.

Montevetrano takes its name from a medieval castle that dates to Roman times.  A former property of the French Bourbons, the estate itself was the inspiration for this blend of French varietals with the Campanian king of red grapes – Aglianico. Pleasing scores of wine lovers around the world with its distinctive character and rich spectrum of flavours, Montevetrano is one of the most sought-after wines from Italy.

Montevetrano is a small zone in the hills near the commune of San Cipriano Picentino, not far from Salerno. Mountains surround the property, with the vineyards situated on gentle slopes facing south by southwest. The heart of the estate is a beautiful, ancient villa. In the first years of production the basement of the villa also served as the cellar. Now the wine is made and stored in a new modern cellar, built-in 2000. Silvia and her friends use the old cellar for private vintages. Within a very short period of time, her work with Cotarella has produced an absolute jewel in this location.
