Grant Burge

2009 Shadrach Cabernet Sauvignon, Grant Burge

Barossa Valley, AustraliaVintage: 2009

Shadrach is one of the Grant Burge Icon wines that are named in honour of Meshach Burge, the great grandfather of founder Grant Burge who began an enduring family winemaking tradition.  The biblical origins of his name inspired the naming of this wine along with the story that Shadrach, with Abednego and Meshach, were cast into the fiery furnace by King Nebuchadnezzar in 600BC.

Shadrach represents the best Cabernet Sauvignon from Grant Burge Wines and this 2009 vintage is a blend of 38% Barossa and 62% Eden Valley fruit.

The palate is round and luscious with flavours following from the nose of blackberry, ripe plums with complex layers of chocolate, coffee and a little spice and meatiness. A powerful flavoursome wine, with elegant French oak tannins and displaying exceptional length.

Why we love it

A classic mature Cabernet Sauvignon

Notable Awards

95 points. James Halliday Wine Companion “Barrel and bottle ageing has led to the first stages of colour change; overall this cabernet sauvignon has remarkable synergy to its flavour, structure and texture inputs, resulting in a supple, ultra-smooth and beautifully balanced exercise in blackcurrant/cassis fruit. “

Description

Grant Burge comes from a long line of winemakers in Barossa that date back to the mid-1800s. Grant is the fifth generation of this winemaking dynasty and formed Grant Burge Wines in 1988 with his wife, Helen.

Grant Burge’s winemaking team is led by Chief Winemaker, Craig Stansborough. While he believes that attention to detail is of the utmost importance when crafting beautiful Barossa wines, the team is blessed with fantastic fruit that requires polishing and shaping, rather than heavy-handed manipulation in the winery.

The breadth of the Grant Burge range is wide-ranging, from sparkling and rosé wines to classic Shiraz, Grenache and fortified wines. However, the winemaking style that links them all is the commitment to enhancing flavour, generosity and drinkability.

As well as big and bold reds for the drinkers who love this style, Grant Burge has also curated a selection of elegant and stylish wines that cater to drinkers who appreciate this style. The versatility of the region is one of its greatest strengths.

With many iconic wines in the range including the ‘The Holy Trinity’ GSM or 98 points scoring Meshach Shiraz, Grant Burge wines have continued to gather much-deserved acclaim.

Not only has the Meshach 2012 been given an incredible 98 points by James Halliday, it was also recently awarded the Gold Medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2019 and has been list on the Barossa Grape and Wine Association’s inaugural Barossa Super 100 Classification, a list of the most sought after and collectable wines in Barossa.

The wine underwent traditional fermentation in open stainless steel static fermenters for seven days, with a portion of the fruit left on skins to undergo extended maceration to develop its structure and longevity. The balance underwent primary and malolactic fermentation in French oak, the wine was then matured in new and two-year-old oak for a further 20 months before bottling. It has spent 1 ½ years in bottle before its release.
