Tandem2015 Macula, Tandem
Navarra, SpainVintage: 2015
Tandem is the visionary project of José Maria Fraile and Alicia Eyaralar, two of Navarra’s most respected winemaking talents. Nestled in the Yerri Valley in northern Spain, the estate is guided by a philosophy of sustainability, low intervention, and respect for the land. Dry-farming, organic vineyard practices, and minimal use of machinery all reflect Tandem’s commitment to preserving the environment while producing wines of depth, purity, and character.
The 2015 vintage, considered exceptional, provided ideal conditions for the crafting of Macula, a bold yet refined blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and Merlot (40%). Harvested at optimal ripeness and fermented with precision, the wine captures the unique terroir of the region’s clay-loam soils and cool valley breezes.
On the nose, Macula 2015 is remarkably complex, unfolding in layers of clove, black pepper, and pipe tobacco, interwoven with earthy minerality, wild herbs, and subtle balsamic notes. A deep core of dark chocolate and black fruit adds richness and intrigue. The palate is full-bodied yet elegant, with velvety tannins and vibrant freshness supporting flavours of ripe blackberry, espresso, and savoury spice. The finish is long, persistent, and perfectly poised, showcasing the wine’s structure, balance, and ageing potential.

Description
Tandem is the brainchild of José Maria Fraile and Alicia Eyaralar, two of the leading lights in the Navarra winemaking scene. Committed to making the best wines in the region with minimal intervention in the vineyards and winery, Tandem is cited by critics as ‘cutting edge’ Navarra. The grapes are cultivated in the heart of the Yerri Valley, which is recognised as the best area for quality wine in the region. Respect for nature is an obsession – they follow the precepts of sustainable viticulture, while maintaining the vineyard’s health and viability. In the winery, a minimum intervention approach is also taken to ensure the grapes reflect their true character and terroir. In 2019, Tandem were certified Vegan and accredited the internationally recognised ‘V label’ by the European Vegetarian Union.
The two varieties were vinified separately. Fermentation took place at controlled temperatures of between 30 to 31°C, lasting 30 days. The cap was plunged but no pumps were used during the process. The wine was racked by gravity to underground concrete vats where it underwent malolactic conversion and was naturally fined through settling. The wine was matured for 18 months in French 300 litre oak casks.
