Kistler

2017 Chardonnay ‘Vine Hill Vineyard’, Kistler

California, USAVintage: 2017

Kistler Vineyards are one of California’s aristocrats and produce world class Chardonnays.  They are some of our favourite wines on earth – real desert island wines!

Kistler is a single clone chardonnay house – that means one heritage Californian selection of Chardonnay planted across fifteen vineyards, from Carneros to Sonoma Valley, to the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast. From those sites they produce eleven vineyard designate Chardonnays. Kistler is wholly dedicated to the ideal of wines of site. It’s an unparalleled approach in the new world.

The Vine Hill vineyard is planted in a pure sand soils and produces Chardonnay of precise concentration, energy and verve with stone and orchard fruit toned aromas capped by a penetrating minerality. It’s an exceptional example of the tension that can be created between density and lift.

Notable Awards

96 points, Erin Brooks, The Wine Advocate. “The 2017 Chardonnay Vine Hill Vineyard grows in very pure sandy soils with almost no organic material. It has a singularly perfumed, layered nose full of citrus and flowers: lime, lemon and orange peel with lovely citrus blossom perfume, petrichor, honey, toast, quince paste, dried hay and guava. Medium-bodied, it explodes with flavor layers in the mouth, broad and textural with seamless acidity and an incredibly long, layered finish. Wow!”

96 points, Antonio Galloni.   “The 2017 Chardonnay Vine Hill Vineyard, from Kistler’s estate ranch in Sebastopol, is subtle, nuanced and incredibly classy. In this tasting, the Vine Hill is silky and lifted, with striking nuance and exceptional balance. Lemon confit, white flowers and mint, along with the wine’s mid-weight feel, speak to elegance above all else. Bright saline notes punctuate the finish. The Vine Hill is a modern-day classic Kistler Chardonnay. “

Description

Kistler Vineyards are one of California’s aristocrats.   This is easily supported by less partial voice than our own: Robert Parker writes: “Every year the wines are brilliant. Given the breadth of Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs produced by Steve Kistler, he is the undeniable master of these two varietals in California”. Stephen Brook: “I have yet to meet a Kistler Chardonnay that has failed to bowl me over”.

And Jancis Robinson: “I know I have gone on record as being no enthusiast of Chardonnay at its most basic…. but I can certainly appreciate great Chardonnays such as those of Coche- Dury in Meursault and Kistler in Sonoma as some of the best wines on the planet.”

The winery sits in the Russian River Valley. The first vintage in 1979 produced 3,500 cases of wine and since then the winery has slowly grown to the planned production level of about 25,000 cases per year. Steve Kistler received a B.A. from Stanford University, studied at U.C. Davis and Fresno State University for two years, and was an assistant at Ridge Vineyards for two years before founding Kistler Vineyards. Grape sources include some of the finest vineyards in Napa and Sonoma Counties. After years of planning, they constructed a new winery at their Vine Hill Vineyard in the Russian River Valley in 1992. The facility is state of the art, optimised for the production of limited quantities of the very highest quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
