Bodegas Ondarre2017 Mayor De Ondarre Rioja Reserva, Bodegas Ondarre
Rioja, SpainVintage: 2017
It is only in years with grapes of exceptional quality that a limited number of bottles of Mayor de Ondarre Rioja Reserva are produced. From two plots of old vines, the grapes are handpicked into small crates and then sorted to ensure only the best quality fruit makes the blend. The winemaking is classic Rioja, with 19 months in oak casks (80% French and 20% American), with the aim of preserving maximum concentration. A further couple of years in the bottle result in a completely mindblowing Rioja.
In the glass, it has a dark cherry colour with shades of iodine- blue. On the nose, it has a complex bouquet of fruit, with smoky and spicy aromas. On the palate, it is full-bodied and long, with a lot of concentration, which augurs well for a long life ahead.

Description
Bodegas Ondarre was founded in 1985, with the aim of creating wines which showcase the region’s distinct terroirs. The cooperative winery is situated in the town of Viana which overlooks the Rioja Valley in Rioja Oriental. Bodegas Ondarre has formed trusted relationships with the highest quality growers in the area, with whom they have been working since 1985. The Reservas are Bodegas Ondarre’s most acclaimed wines, which win top awards and critical approval every year. They attribute their success to hard work in the vineyards and their continual investment in the winery and barrel stock. They use both French and American oak casks to help them obtain the character in their wines. They also produce a few thousand cases of a single varietal Graciano – a real rarity due to the low-yielding nature of this variety.
Traditional vinification method. In the vat for three weeks and fermented at between 20ºC and 26ºC, with daily pumping over and délestages. Malolactic fermentation in new barrels made from oak from Missouri and Central France, followed by ageing on its lees until it is racked.
16 months in oak casks (80% French and 20% American). In order to preserve the maximum concentration, the wine is spontaneously clarified through a series of rackings. After bottling it remains at least 20 months in our bottle cellar.
