Fattoria Le Pupille

2018 Poggio Valente IGT, Fattoria Le Pupille

Tuscany, ItalyVintage: 2018

Poggio Valente is a cru vineyard located in Pereta, near Scansano and was purchased by Elisabetta Geppetti in 1996. The focus of the project here was on the Sangiovese grape and within a few years the wine became another significant milestone with its expression of Maremma’s terroir.

Matured for 18 months in new oak Poggio Valente is a medium ruby red in colour. The nose shows hints of red and black fruits with distinct aromas of blackberry, cherry and black plum, following notes of tobacco, nutmeg and forest floor. The palate is elegant and balanced, with sweet and silky tannins. Perfect served with fillet of beef and green pepper or polenta with wild boar – one of the classic dishes of Maremma’s cuisine.

Notable Awards

94 points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate “The Fattoria Le Pupille 2018 Poggio Valente is an elegant expression of Sangiovese with just a hint of the freewheeling wildness that characterizes the Maremma region of southern Tuscany. The wine delivers cherry, wild rose, forest fruit and blueberry. Beyond those primary tones are integrated notes of spice and mild tobacco. The wine is put together with careful precision, and all it needs now is more aging time in order to flesh out and build depth. Everything is set, just give it time. “

Description

Le Pupille is located in the south of the Tuscan Maremma, in the province of Grosseto, a region best known for the Sangiovese-based Morellino di Scansano. Geppetti’s first vintage was 1985. At the time, Le Pupille was a small winery with just 6 hectares of vineyards and was really more of a hobby than a pure commercial venture. The family had close ties with Giacomo Tachis, who suggested grafting Cabernet Sauvignon onto existing Sangiovese rootstocks. The first Saffredis (1987-1990) were 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the original estate’s original vineyard holdings.

Quality and consistency increased noticeably when Christian Le Sommer, former winemaker at Chateau Latour, took over winemaking with the 2000 vintage. Le Sommer introduced malolactic fermentation in steel, which is one of the reasons the post-2000 wines retain incredible freshness, aromatic complexity and nuance.
