Benevolent Neglect

2018 Ribolla Gialla, Benevolent Neglect

California, USAVintage: 2018

Ribolla Gialla is an ancient variety that originated in Greece and is mostly found in northeastern Italy and across the border in Slovenia, where it is known as Rebula.

This California version is sourced from the Bengier Family Vineyard, a hidden gem inside of the Napa Valley’s nested ava Oak Knoll District. Fermented traditionally on skins for 15 days, this wine takes on a completely unique character for white wine. Due to its time on its skin and in the barrel it shows quite a bit of minerality, citrus skin with a core of tropical fruit with much in between.

Tasting Note: Light, bright and fresh lemon sherbet draw the nose in followed by almond and acacia. On the palate, the wine is mineral, with slight notes of sour pear drop. The finish is long and refreshingly sour. This is a perfect oyster wine, match it with foods equally as bright, like a fresh arugula salad with a racy vinaigrette.

Why we love it

A skin-contact white that is all about the spice and rocky, mineral notes, rather than overt fruit. A little nutmeg, root ginger, toasted almonds and blossom. A real thinking wine.

Description

Benevolent Neglect

Winemakers Matt Nagy and Ben Brenner are East Coast escapees who have made California their home.  Matt previously worked for Maybach Cellars, a famous and highly regarded winemaking family who have been producing premium wines for generations. During his time with Maybach, Matt produced some of California’s highest-scoring wines. Ben has also had an equally impressive career including time with Rutherford Wine Co, a family estate who have pioneered sustainable farming and winemaking in Napa Valley.

BUT their passion is Benevolent Neglect, a tiny-production labour of love that is all about crafting the very best wines with the very least of intervention.

Here’s how they view their approach to winemaking: Minimal intervention is likely the best way to describe our winemaking style. The idea of the winemaker is to be the reliable translator — to take what was made in the vineyard from the sun, water, and soil and let it become the finest wine that it can be. We use very little new oak, no oak substitutes, and no industrial additives. If we get the farming right and the weather co-operates we won’t do any additions of water or acidity to alter the natural balance of the wine.   We will occasionally ferment with whole clusters if it helps to bring out the best qualities of the vineyard, and try our hardest never to over-extract tannins from the skins and seeds.   All of our red wines are unfined and unfiltered, with some whites getting filtered simply to ensure stability in bottle for the consumer. We believe in transparent winemaking,  doing things the natural way, and being open to experimentation. Most importantly, we want to keep having fun with what we do in the cellar.

This is a classic northeast Italian white grape variety usually made in the same way as red wine by being left in contact with the skins. After the grapes are crushed the wines is left on skins for a full 15 days,  then transferred to neutral oak barrels for 15 months to settle and mature. Interestingly the vines were brought to Napa by Josko Gravner in 2001, the Gravner wine from Italy are considered some of the best versions of this variety in the world, making Josko a real winemaking legend.
