Querciabella

2019 Chianti Classico Riserva, Querciabella

Tuscany, ItalyVintage: 2019

Querciabella are serously good at making Chainti and are regarded as one the finest producers in Tuscany.

True to the saying that “the whole should be greater than the sum of its parts”, Querciabella Chianti Classico Riserva is a blend of the finest Sangiovese grapes sourced from the estate’s vineyards in Greve, Radda, and Gaiole in Chianti.

In the glass, aromas of coffee and mocha permeate dark red cherry, while garnishes of rosemary and sage emerge with coaxing. The palate is confidently weighted yet agile, with beautiful fruit purity of black raspberry ringing out.   This wine will gracefully age for 10+ years.  Drink 2023 – 2033.

94/100 Michaela Morris · Decanter

95+/100 Audrey Frick · JebDunnuck.com.   “Readers looking for a serious, yet polished style will love the 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva. Dark layers of menthol, licorice, black cherry, and incense intertwine and unfold in the glass. Full and generous with red and black fruit, it has a remarkable weightlessness while simultaneously delivering beautiful concentration. With ripe tannins, notes of blood orange zest, red plum, and salty earth, and a refreshing snap of acidity on the finish, it is approachable in its youth and will continue to improve over the coming 10-15 years. This is an outstanding wine to snap up. Drink 2023 – 2038.”

Description

The name Querciabella – meaning ‘beautiful oak’ – is entirely appropriate to this estate in Chianti, which is surrounded by a sheltering forest of magnificent trees. Sebastiano Castiglioni is at the helm of one of the most innovative wineries in Italy, spearheading vegan and biodynamic practices in his two estates. Helped by the incredibly talented South African winemaker Manfred Ing, Querciabella are releasing not only some of the purest expressions of Chianti Classico but also venturing into Super-Tuscan territory with Camartina and Palafreno. Querciabella are also responsible for one of the most acclaimed Italian whites, Batàr, alongside a range of exciting Maremma wines.

Grapes are hand-picked at optimal ripening in different site across the appellation. Following de-stemming, a further selection on the cellar’s sorting table ensures that only the best berries are crushed and transferred into a combination of stainless steel, cement and oak fermenters.

Each lot of Sangiovese ferments separately at cool temperatures (22°C–28°C) with gentle pump-overs and remains on the skins for up to 4 weeks for post-fermentation maceration. We might use submerged caps to ferment the best vineyards and bring out their unique textural complexity. After malolactic fermentation, the base wines mature in 225L barrels, 500L tonneau or 30 HL oak vats for 14 months. Once the final blend is bottled, it ages for at least six months before release.
