Matthiasson2019 Linda Vista Chardonnay, Matthiasson
California, USAVintage: 2019
Steve Matthiasson is a bit of a legend in Napa Valley and this wine is made from the Linda Vista Vineyard in the Oak Knoll region of Napa Valley. Oak Knoll is regarded as one of the classic Chardonnay spots in Napa as the cool winds and clay soils preserve zesty acidity and freshness, while the Napa sun provides richness and ripeness.
Steve leased the vineyard in 2011 and set about making a classic Napa Chardonnay. To get complexity, completeness and balance in his Chardonnay, Steve harvests grapes a number of different times during the ripening period to achieve a diversity of ripeness, the earlier harvests contribute acidity and minerality, and the later harvests contribute flesh and richness.
This 2019 Linda Vista Chardonnay has an exotic nose of Golden Delicious apples, yellow peaches, musk melon and honey that leads through to the palate. The medium acidity is balanced by pleasant fleshiness, finishing very clean with a hint of minerality. Refreshing and with moderate alcohol, this wine is all about pleasure, begging to be drunk up, with some oysters or a roast chicken and a big smile.
Why we love it
Matthiasson’s Napa version of a Puligny-Montrachet.

Description
Founded in Napa Valley in 2003 by Jill and Steve Matthiasson, Matthiasson Wines is one of California’s leading wine producers, has influenced scores of industry professionals in both the natural and conventional wine sectors. They make a number of different restrained and classically balanced wines from both common and uncommon varieties. Steve was named Winemaker of the Year by both Food and Wine Magazine and the San Francisco Chronicle and was nominated six times for the James Beard Award. He also is a co-author of the California Code of Sustainable Winegrowing. A partner in Premiere Viticultural Services has provided viticultural consulting with a focus on organic and regenerative methods since 1995 to vineyards throughout California. Jill pioneered “farmer to farmer” networking for sustainability in the early 90s while working for a family farming non-profit and ran programs training farmers on direct sales, such as CSAs and farmers markets before local food had the momentum that it has now. Jill and Steve are very supportive of social justice and environmental movements in the wine industry.
For complexity, completeness, and balance, we achieve a diversity of ripeness by using the traditional method of harvesting the fruit a number of different times during the ripening period. The earlier harvests contribute acidity and minerality, and the later harvests contribute flesh and richness. We whole-cluster press all of the grapes, then ferment and age the wine in seasoned French oak barrels, with only native yeast. No battonage (lees stirring) or racking. We allow two-fifths of the barrels to go through malo-lactic fermentation.
