Querciabella2020 Chianti Classico Organic, Querciabella
Tuscany, ItalyVintage: 2019
Querciabella Chianti Classico has been the centrepiece of Querciabella’s winemaking operations since the winery’s debut. Consistently ranking at the highest levels of critical acclaim it’s a real delight for wine and food enthusiasts all over the world.
A beautiful balancing act of crisp, inviting acidity, pure varietal fruit flavour and character, Querciabella Chianti Classico represents the pinnacle of high-altitude, perfectly exposed Sangiovese fruit. Its complexity and consistency derive from sourcing the grapes from top sites across the Classico region.
Each vineyard is cared for on a lot by lot basis to respect the essence of each site. The same focus and precision in the cellar, allow for natural winemaking with minimal intervention, that preserves the purity of the fruit. After about 14 months in fine-grained oak barrels, and regular racking, only the best lots make it to the final blend. Once bottled, the wine rests patiently for a few more months before release. This patient maturation adds a layer of softness and enhances the varietal fruit notes typical of quality Sangiovese.
Sangiovese practically screams for anything with tomato sauce and the natural pairing with Tuscan regional food is, of course, Pappa al Pomodoro. A heartier option is to pair this full-bodied wine with a dish that can stand up to its great structure and complexity like Spaghetti Bolognese.

“Just mid ruby. Perfumed but shy nose with hints of stones. Supple, suave and elegant and with a full aromatic spread on the palate. Great polish and shine. Fantastic crunchy tannins. A real beauty.“

Description
The name Querciabella – meaning ‘beautiful oak’ – is entirely appropriate to this estate in Chianti, which is surrounded by a sheltering forest of magnificent trees. Sebastiano Castiglioni is at the helm of one of the most innovative wineries in Italy, spearheading vegan and biodynamic practices in his two estates. Helped by the incredibly talented South African winemaker Manfred Ing, Querciabella are releasing not only some of the purest expressions of Chianti Classico but also venturing into Super-Tuscan territory with Camartina and Palafreno. Querciabella are also responsible for one of the most acclaimed Italian whites, Batàr, alongside a range of exciting Maremma wines.
Grapes are hand-picked at optimal ripening in different site across the appellation. Following de-stemming, a further selection on the cellar’s sorting table ensures that only the best berries are crushed and transferred into a combination of stainless steel, cement and oak fermenters.
Each lot of Sangiovese ferments separately at cool temperatures (22°C–28°C) with gentle pump-overs and remains on the skins for up to 4 weeks for post-fermentation maceration. We might use submerged caps to ferment the best vineyards and bring out their unique textural complexity. After malolactic fermentation, the base wines mature in 225L barrels, 500L tonneau or 30 HL oak vats for 14 months. Once the final blend is bottled, it ages for at least six months before release.
