Xanadu

2021 Circa 77 Chardonnay, Xanadu

Margaret River, AustraliaVintage: 2021

Circa 77 wines are Xanadu’s excellent value, everyday drinking wines that are named after the wineries’ inception in 1977.  Circa 77 demonstrates not just the lifestyle and natural beauty of Margaret River, but just how special the combination of our pristine maritime climate and ancient soils are in producing wines of vibrancy and personality.

In the glass, the bouquet of this elegant, fruit-driven Chardonnay offers fresh pears, gala apples, and grapefruit characters with underlying hints of cantaloupe melon and hay. Oak is merely a bystander, yet its subtle influence adds another layer to the fruit aromas.

The palate is medium-bodied offering apple, pear, quince fruits and zesty citrus flavours with a delicate creamy texture derived from lees stirring. A bright, refreshing wine; crisp and dry, with a lingering fruit finish.

The wine is best consumed in its youth however it is certainly suitable for medium-term cellaring of 3-5 years.

Description

Xanadu is a true pioneer of the Margaret River region producing fresh and vibrant coastal wines. The estate was established by Dr John Lagan, an Irishman, who arrived in Margaret River in 1968. Captivated by the pioneering spirit of the region, along with his wife Eithne, he planted his first vines in 1977. Inspired by the beauty of the setting, they named the property after the mysterious, idyllic paradise in Samuel Coleridge’s poem, Kubla Khan: Xanadu. True to its poetic namesake, Xanadu is in an idyllic setting, where 65 hectares of vines flourish on the original estate. Passionate and dedicated winemaker Glenn Goodall joined in 1999, combining intuitive winemaking, and a deep respect for the sustainably cultivated vineyard- which is a member of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia- he produces world-class wines of distinction. Glenn was awarded Halliday’s ‘Best Winemaker of the Year Australia 2023’ and in 2018 Xanadu won the Jimmy Watson memorial trophy.

All components were pressed without crushing or the use of enzymes, retaining relatively high solids in the juice after settling for 48 hours. 65% of the blend was fermented in predominantly seasoned French oak barriques (only 6% new oak in final blend). Wild fermentation was encouraged on barrel fermented components, in order to introduce complexity and personality into the wine. 35% of the blend was tank fermented using an aromatic yeast strain; after fermentation the tank is mixed to homogenise the lees throughout the wine before being transferred to old oak for maturation. None of the batches undergo MLF, however all batches which make up the blend were lees stirred throughout a nine-month barrel maturation period, gaining texture throughout the year. The final blend was put together in November 2021
