Red WineThis incredible value wine is produced by the Cellers Unio co-operative in Terra Alta, west of the Catalonia coastline. Garnacha thrives in these hot conditions, while the local winds blow through the vineyard, helping to temper the heat and keep the vines clean.
The wine opens in the glass with expressive aromas of flowers and red fruits with some really interesting balsamic notes. The palate is ripe, fresh and fruity with a touch of sweetness.
Brilliant Grenache for the money.
White WineThe wines of Clos Dalian are handcrafted by one of Spain’s greatest co-ops. Since 1942, the Cellers Unio have continued a 200-year-old winemaking tradition in Catalonia and the surrounding regions.
This white Grenache/Garnacha is bright white with golden hue. Aromas of ripe white fruit and minerals rise from the glass. The palate is surprising for this price – creamy, fleshy, fresh and very seductive in the mouth. Its mid-palate is quite long and silky. This is an all-round good drinking wine that surprises you with its flavour, texture and food-friendly nature. Great value.
Sparkling, CavaThis Cava is made by the prestigious, Bodega Pinord in the Penedès region of North-East Spain which is between Barcelona and Tarragona in Catalonia.
Their award-winning Cava ‘+&+’ stands for ‘More and More’, which represents the unparalleled drinkability of this crisp and refreshing sparkling wine.
It is made from 3 native grape varieties, Xarel-lo, Macabeo and Parellada. Xarello, sometimes hyphenated as Xarel-lo, is a light-skinned native Catalan grape, noted for bringing high acidity to the blend, an essential characteristic in sparkling wine, along with refreshing citrusy flavours. Macabeo is a synonym for Viura and produces fresh, floral and aromatic wines, while Parellada flourishes in higher altitude sites where it retains acidity and brings complementary notes of blossom and green apple.
White WineThis wine is a ‘Vi de Vila’ – made from grapes harvested from a single village (in this case 40-year-old PX vines from the village of Poboleda). The wine is fermented in modern egg-shaped polypropylene tanks to enable controlled micro-oxygenation. It is then aged on the lees for 3 months before being bottled unoaked.
One of only 2 Spanish regions awarded DOQ status (the other is Rioja), Priorat is known for the quality of its wines from rocky, silica slate (Llicorella) soils. The high diurnal range in Priorat contributes to producing fresh, aromatic wines.
Bright golden in colour. Complex aromatics with hints of white fruits, blossom and peach. The palate is creamy and tropical, with a long finish. Serve chilled with smoked salmon, grilled seafood and creamy cheese.
Red WineIn the heart of the wine appellation, D.O.Q. Priorat, between the villages of Bellmunt and Falset, Pinord makes its wines from the grapes grown on the 18 hectares (44 acres) of vineyard of their Mas Blanc property.
Due to its special location, the Mas Blanc property has been caringly transformed by building various kilometres of vine terraces and by planting, cultivating and looking after the traditional grape varieties of Grenache and Carignan (Garnatxa and Carinyena as they are known locally) as well as introducing new varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. Thus, a wild space has been turned into a model vineyard, with steeply sloping terraces which mean that virtually all vineyard work must be done by hand.
Ripe, dense black fruits, vanilla and chocolate aromas envelop the full-bodied, but elegant palate, which is rich and very silky with a long, smooth finish. The ageing in oak is noticeable, well blended with fruity aromas which give it finesse and complexity.
The grapes are sourced from seven different plots of vineyards, where the soils are made up of a slate known locally as ‘licorella’. Slate soils are known for their heat-retention properties, which encourages the vines to reach maturity. The vines are cultivated organically and harvested by hand.
