    2022 Local Growers Semillon, Rockford

    £3300

Rockford Wines is one of Australia’s most cherished small producers, celebrated for its steadfast commitment to traditional winemaking techniques and the preservation of Barossa Valley’s rich viticultural heritage. Based in a heritage-listed stone winery in Krondorf, Rockford sources fruit from a trusted network of local growers, many of whom have worked with the winery for decades.

The Local Growers Semillon is a tribute to these longstanding partnerships and the Semillon grape itself, a historically significant but increasingly rare variety in the Barossa. While Semillon is often overlooked in favour of more fashionable whites, Rockford embraces its heritage, producing a wine of quiet confidence and superb ageing potential. Fruit is often picked early to preserve acidity and clarity, then vinified with a light touch to retain varietal expression and texture.

In the glass, it is fresh, focused, and unmistakably Barossan.  It opens with lifted aromas of lemon blossom, green apple, lime zest, and a hint of beeswax. The palate is dry, crisp, and beautifully structured with flavours of citrus peel, white peach, and subtle herb notes that glide across a fine, chalky texture. A vibrant line of acidity adds drive and precision, finishing clean, savoury, and refreshingly long.

2021 ‘Ode to Lorraine’ Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot, Elderton

    £3995

The 2021 ‘Ode to Lorraine’ is a masterful expression of Elderton’s philosophy of excellence through blending – a hidden gem within their premium red portfolio. Crafted from the finest estate-grown fruit on the historic Nuriootpa vineyard, this wine celebrates the harmony of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Merlot, sourced from vines dating back to 1894.

In the glass, it shows a vibrant deep crimson hue, hinting at the richness within. The bouquet is layered and compelling, with brooding red and dark fruits, lifted by subtle notes of bay leaf and a whisper of earth. It is powerful yet elegant on the palate, revealing a rich tapestry of vibrant cassis, sweet spice of cinnamon and clove, and luxurious hints of dark chocolate. The fine, long tannins are beautifully integrated, bringing structure and grace, as they interplay seamlessly with the wine’s opulent fruit core.

Matured for 20 months in a mix of new and seasoned French puncheons, this wine shows both richness and restraint, offering complexity now and the promise of remarkable evolution over time.

A fitting tribute to the matriarch of the Ashmead family, ‘Ode to Lorraine’ is a bold, beautifully balanced wine that can be enjoyed now or confidently cellared for 15+ years.

    2020 Moppa Springs Grenache-Mataro-Shiraz, Rockford

    £4800

A stupendous blend of Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz is elegant and restrained with a subtle note of vanilla and pretty floral notes.  The Grenache supplies tangy sour cherry to this blend whilst Mataro offers a savoury cocoa note and Shiraz holds it all together with a backbone of fine tannins and a touch of brambly fruit.

Moppa Springs, Ebenezer, and Kalimna, are some of the driest areas in the Barossa. This hard country is cold, wet and frosty during pruning, then hot, dry and dusty during harvest. These are the kind of tough conditions that ensure Grenache, Mataro, and Shiraz give their best.

The grapes are hand-forked into Rockford’s famed 1880’s Bagshaw de-stemmer, open-fermented and then gently basket pressed. All of the components for Moppa Springs are aged separately in a combination of seasoned American and French oak hogsheads and large vats to allow the tannins to soften and colours and flavours to consolidate.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2010-the-ironstone-pressings-gsm-darenberg/">2010 The Ironstone Pressings GSM, d’Arenberg</a> Red Wine

2010 The Ironstone Pressings GSM, d’Arenberg

    £4900

The Ironstone Pressings is named because most of McLaren Vale’s acclaimed and historic vineyards are impregnated with ancient, decomposed laterite granite known as ironstone. Its extraordinary rusty red-brown colour is derived from the iron oxides present in the stone. The larger pieces were cleared from the vineyards in the late 1880s and utilised in many of the buildings at d’Arenberg, most notably the old stables.

Unctuous blackberry and plum notes lay at the heart of this classic d’Arenberg example of a Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre (GSM).  A spattering of exotic spices the likes of star anise, cardamom and nutmeg cling to the sweet, dark fruits and of course, it wouldn’t be a d’Arenberg wine without a rousing dose of earthy, gamey character.   The palate is fleshy and juicy with an almost velvet-like texture. Abundantly warm and generous but sufficiently structured to suggest this wine can go the long hall.

While enjoyable in youth, this wine will reach its full potential with bottle age up to at least 20 years. The considerable structure and depth will ensure that the fruit characters will develop over time revealing more complexity and providing immense interest.

2020 Rod and Spur Shiraz-Cabernet, Rockford

    £5500

This incredible blend of Shiraz & Cabernet Sauvignon is a uniquely Australian blend that pays homage to the great Aussie wines of yesteryear.    With plenty of sweet spice and brambly black fruit comes a concentrated blackcurrant and vanilla aroma, followed by a rich, full-bodied palate. The flavour is full of crunchy black fruit with soft tannins, refreshing acidity and subtle vanilla sweetness.

The name Rod & Spur acknowledges the contribution of Rockford’s growers who spend the cold Barossa winters hand-pruning their vines in the traditional rod and spur method. This wine is a return to the great Australian reds of the 1950s and 60’s, when Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon blends dominated the premium market. This very Australian wine is not common in any other region of the world.

Like all Rockford reds, the grapes for this wine go through an 1880s Bagshaw de-stemmer, are open fermented and then gently basket pressed. All components are aged separately in a combination of seasoned American and French oak hogsheads and large oak casks for two years. This allows the tannins to soften and colours and flavours to consolidate, before being bottled under the highest quality cork.

2017 The Old Bloke and The Three Young Blonds, d’Arenberg

    £7500

A mix of gnarly, old Shiraz partnered with youthful, exotic and fragrant white varieties. The Shiraz offers a nose brimming with dark, earthen fruits, woody spices and rich blackberry aromas. Viognier adds fragrance in the form of apricot, ginger and florals, Roussanne delivers an exotic, dried almond and papaya note, and the Marsanne contributes pistachio and yellow stonefruit.

The palate is generous, with layers of fruit characters that ebb and flow through the entire length. The tannin structure is unique, thanks to the mingling of red and white phenolics. The rustic, chunky, mid-palate Shiraz tannins are tempered by the lusciousness of the white varieties, the finish enhanced by the addition of fragrant, flowery tannins, mainly on account of the Viognier and more nutty, walnut skin texture, from the Roussanne.

A complex and alluring wine that evolves in the glass. So much individual character and much to take in, but somehow we are left with a sense of harmony between the old bloke and the three young blondes.

2019 Rifle Range Cabernet Sauvignon, Rockford

    £7800

The nose on this elegant cabernet is generous, rich and ripe with plenty of classic blackcurrant fruit with cocoa and tobacco notes. The palate is fresh and herbal with thyme notes that lift the concentrated black fruit. Smooth, silky tannins and a wonderful freshness on the finish.

Rifle Range Road, which runs parallel to Krondorf Road, is in the heart of the Valley Floor and winds its way up the hills to Kaiser Stuhl National Park. The old rifle range is long gone, but the farming land and vineyards that have long been part of the landscape are still there.  “Because most of our Cabernet Sauvignon comes from vineyards adjacent to Rifle Range Road, it seemed the most appropriate name for this wine, which has been part of Rockford since the very beginning.”

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2020-command-shiraz-elderton/">2020 Command Shiraz, Elderton</a> Red Wine

    2020 Command Shiraz, Elderton

    £7900

The 2020 Elderton Command Shiraz stands as a testament to the Barossa Valley’s rich winemaking heritage and Elderton’s commitment to excellence. Sourced exclusively from a single block of the Nuriootpa estate, planted in 1894 and classed as an Ancestor Vineyard under the Barossa Old Vine Charter, this wine represents over a century of viticultural excellence and family legacy.

Crafted by the second generation of the Ashmead family, Allister and Cameron, this iconic Shiraz continues the vision set by their parents – to produce one of the great wines of the world. Since its first release in 1984, Command has garnered a reputation as one of Australia’s most celebrated and collectable Shiraz wines.

In the glass, the nose is rich and brooding, layered with dark, concentrated fruits and lifted by intriguing notes of roasted coffee bean. On the palate, plush flavours of spiced plums and cloves unfold, supported by a fine seam of black forest character. Bold, yet beautifully poised, the tannin structure is firm but polished, carrying the wine to a seamless, long finish underscored by remarkable fruit purity and complexity.

This vintage is poised for longevity, with the structure and depth to evolve gracefully over the next 15 to 20 years. While already impressive in its youth, it will reward careful cellaring, unfolding further nuance and finesse with time. A truly remarkable wine that captures the soul of its historic vineyard and the enduring spirit of the Elderton estate.

    2018 Basket Press Shiraz, Rockford

    £8000

One of the world’s truly iconic wines.   Rockford’s Basket Press Shiraz represents the true style of Rockford and it draws heavily on the wisdom and shared knowledge of previous generations of Australian winemakers and recognises that at the heart of every great wine are great vineyards.

Basket Press Shiraz is made using equipment from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, before aging in a collection of seasoned American and French oak hogsheads and large casks for two years. After bottling the wine is sealed under the highest quality cork. This approach enables Rockford to make the kind of traditional, soft, deeply coloured, earthy Australian red wine that Robert O’Callaghan first became fascinated by as a budding winemaker in the 1960s.

    2021 Shiraz ‘1915 Helbig ‘, Elderton

    £21000

A single vineyard selection of truly remarkable Shiraz that was planted by the Helbig family in 1915. This vineyard is located on the western ridge of the famous Barossa Valley and has been a highly sought-after parcel for many of the Barossa’s leading winemakers. Luckily for the Ashmead family, they were able to acquire this vineyard in 2010, forever ending the race to get this amazing fruit.

In the glass, the wine presents a deep, inky crimson core with a vibrant purple rim, hinting at its youthful vitality and richness. The nose is an intense bouquet of ripe black plums and spiced red berries, layered with dark chocolate, liquorice, and a touch of clove. Subtle hints of vanilla and freshly turned earth add intrigue and complexity.

The palate is full-bodied and opulent, unfurling in waves of brooding dark fruit, think blackberry, cassis, and mulberry, all beautifully integrated with nuances of dark cocoa and savoury spice. A refined chalky minerality underpins the wine’s structure, while velvety, persistent tannins carry it to a long and seamless finish. There is immense power here, yet the wine moves with precision and grace, showcasing the remarkable harmony between fruit intensity, texture, and finesse.

Poised for a long life ahead, the 2021 Helbig 1915 Shiraz is seriously delicious now, but will evolve magnificently over the next 15 to 20 years.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2012-the-caley-cabernet-shiraz-yalumba/">2012 ‘The Caley’ Cabernet & Shiraz, Yalumba</a> Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

2012 ‘The Caley’ Cabernet & Shiraz, Yalumba

    £22400

This is the first vintage of Yalumba’s Cabernet/Shiraz-based flagship wine, The Caley.  Named after Fred Caley Smith, grandson of Yalumba founder Samuel Smith, who was a horticulturist that had a profound impact on the development of Yalumba’s vineyards. In the early 1890’s he spent 18 months trekking across the USA, Britain, Europe, the Middle East, India and Sri Lanka, observing and reporting on scientific and horticultural developments. His detailed letters, sent home every few days, underpinned the way the vineyards were managed and laid the foundations of sustainable viticulture at Yalumba today.

At the time of blending, the winemaking team made the following tasting notes … Deep garnet red in colour, fruit is at the core of the bouquet, all red and black currants – overlaid with savoury herbs, green spices, cedar and pipe tobacco. The palate is of sophisticated precision with a refined line. Long and textured it captures the concentrated flavours and presents them with a silken grace. Under all that supple, fleshy muscle, the wine has a strong spine, structured to last and last.

The Caley has been sourced from three outstanding vineyards of the Coonawarra and Barossa regions. The Ming D block of the Yalumba Coonawarra vineyard provides 52% of the Cabernet Sauvignon of the blend. This 2.7ha plot was planted in 1992 with two clones of Cabernet Sauvignon selected for structure and depth of flavour. This block differs from the ubiquitous Coonawarra terroir, with a higher content of clay than the other blocks on The Menzies Estate. The Shiraz is sourced from the Burgemeister “Linke Block” between Nuriootpa and Angaston. Planted in 1901, these Shiraz vines run east-west and are on a single wire trellis. The soil is a red-brown earth in the Light Pass loamy fine sand family. There is also a component that comes from the 1971 Yalumba Horseshoe Block in Eden Valley.
