White WineEstablished in 1970 Brokenwood Wines is one of Australia’s most reputable premium wine labels and a must-visit in the Hunter Valley. Consistently listed as a 5 star winery, Brokenwood is home to the famous Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz, the highly acclaimed ILR Reserve Semillon, and the popular Cricket Pitch Range.
Brokenwood, along with a large number of Chardonnay producers, are harvesting much earlier than 10 years ago. This is partly due to a lot of vineyards reaching maturity, and therefore having great fruit flavour and concentration at lower sugar levels. Additionally, consumers are demanding more finely structured Chardonnay, meaning lower alcohols and less oak.
Approximately two-thirds from Beechworth the balance being from a combination of the Yarra Valley, Tumbarumba and the Hunter Valley.
Brilliant very pale straw almost water like core with greenish tinged edges. Aromas of white peach and dried honey mix with some biscuity oak notes, cashew and delicate citrusy nougat. Light to mid weight with good focus and a refined feel, the palate is detailed with nectarine and white peach fruits which meld into a back drop of subtle dried honey, nougat, biscuity oak and infusions of gun flint. Good intensity finishing with a burst of fresh acidity. Elegant medium to long aftertaste.

The One That Goes All Minerally. Huge mineral feel, indeed, you paste this into the section under Wine Minerality in an encyclopaedia. All pebbles and talc in perfume, sure, some citrus, citrus blossom, faint bread dough notes, but you’re drawn to the flint and element rocky notes primarily. The palate does the same, flint, wet slate, smooth pebbles rolled around the palate, olive brine, green apple juice and lime comes in too. Feels quite firm despite a sense of juiciness and being dart-shaped and long. Finishes with the faintest kiss of salted nuttiness. Just beautiful. Poised and fine.

White WineThe Tarraford vineyard has some of the oldest chardonnay in the Yarra Valley, and that is reflected in this deliciously intense and structured 2010 vintage. The palate is very textural and complex, (judicious use of lees) full of lemon curd, grapefruit and impressive minerality. Lovely toasty notes finish this wine, and it has certainly aged very well and will drink very well for the next few years.
White WineThe most restrained of the single-vineyard chardonnays from Giant Steps, this has an air of power to it. The 2012 Arthurs Creek Chardonnay is a wine of wonderful texture and intensity has is representative of its old vine vineyard. Marked by punchy, pineapple and citrus aromas, this is a medium-bodied Chardonnay with ample richness and texture. Custard and citrus flavours finish long and mouthwatering. This wine is a rare beast as it is no longer made. A delicious taste of history!
Red WineThis fabulous Pinot Noir from Hardy’s is at its absolute peak now and is an incredible glass of wine. Medium red in colour with vibrant hues with a perfumed, rich and complex nose full of star anise spice and red fruit intermingled with black cherry, blueberry, plum and harmonious oak influence. The use of whole bunches in the press adds subtle complexity. The palate is a mirror image of the bouquet: this wine has a superb length of flavour, a wonderful sweet fruit overlay, mineral acid drive and silky fine tannins.
This really is worthy of your time!
Red WineThe 2010 Tarraford Pinot Noir is a brooding, meaty and earthy expression of Yarra Valley Pinot Noir, with underlying varietal fruit and structural tannins.
The nose gives freshly tilled earth and a meatiness that is tempered by savoury plum and cherry aromas. The wine has great structure, with rhubarb, cherry and a touch of tomato leaf providing interest and a good contrast to the mouth-filling ripe tannins. The wine has a medium to full-bodied finish with savoury red fruits accentuated by gentle spices and elegant oak inputs.
