  • 2019 Sancerre Cuvee Silex, Domaine Serge LaloueWhite Wine

2019 Sancerre Cuvee Silex, Domaine Serge Laloue

    £3300

Serge Laloue has always been one of our favourite winemakers in the Loire, making incredible Sancerre. This we think is their finest Cuvee, crafted by Franck Laloue the Sancerre Silex has intense aromas of smoky graphite with mineral notes of oyster shell that are complemented by zesty orange peel and Mirabelle plum. This fresh, supple cuvée delivers concentrated citrus flavours through to a bright and uplifting mineral finish.

The grapes come from a three-hectare estate vineyard, where the vines have an average age of 40 years, producing low yields of concentrated fruit. The vines face a south-easterly orientation, maximising exposure to the sun to assist ripening of the berries. The soils are ‘silex’, a flinty clay that produces elegant wines with distinctive graphite and mineral characters. The vineyard is currently in conversion to organic status, a natural progression for the Laloue family as the farming methods used over many years have followed these principles. Vineyard management techniques include ploughing the soil instead of using herbicides, growing cover crops between the rows of vines and sexual confusion of predators, to maintain the health of the vines and the biodiversity of the environment.

  • 2019 Sancerre ‘Les Poitevinnes’, Domaine Serge LaloueWhite Wine

2019 Sancerre ‘Les Poitevinnes’, Domaine Serge Laloue

    £3300

Serge Laloue has always been one of our favourite winemakers in the Loire, making incredible Sancerre.  His ‘Les Poitevinnes’ Cuvee is an elegant and complex expression of Sancerre, with concentrated Mirabelle plum and peach underpinned by delicate hints of liquorice, anise and mineral notes. The lovely rounded texture on the palate is beautifully framed by mineral freshness.

The grapes are grown in 0.55 hectares of vineyard within the estate, from vines with an average age of 30 to 35 years. The vines face a south-easterly orientation, maximising exposure to the sun to assist the ripening of the berries. The soils are predominantly calcareous clay, which typically has a high limestone content, producing elegant and textured wines with distinctive minerality.

  • 2020 Taihoa Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, AstrolabeWhite Wine

2020 Taihoa Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, Astrolabe

    £3300

This is a unique New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, the fruit for this wine is grown by Paddy and Anna Trolove at Taihoa Vineyard on Marlborough’s southern Kēkerengū coast.  It is an outlier, both geographically and in a winemaking sense, to the typical sauvignon blanc wines of Marlborough; it is all about complexity, texture and age-worthiness.

In the glass, it is a lemon gold colour with aromas of guava, lime rind, papaya and light leesy nuances.  The palate is powerful and concentrated with a tight mineral texture and flavours of melon, green peach and limoncello.  This wine is already drinking well, but it will continue to evolve, increasing in complexity and roundness over several years.  A natural partner for seafood —particularly oysters as well as soft white cheese, chicken and tarragon pie, and smoked eel.

Winemaker, Simon Waghorn describes the process of making this beautiful as such: “The grapes for my Taihoa Sauvignon blanc are grown with organic management and a low-cropping regime on a beautiful little terrace, high above the sea. We expose the fruit more to the sun by taking leaf away from around the bunches. When it gets to the right stage of ripeness, it’s hand-picked and taken as whole bunches back to the winery, where we press it in the champagne-style method to delicately get the free-run juice away.   Cuvée juice is wild fermented in old 500-litre oak puncheons that have seen several years of chardonnay and then retained in barrel for extended maturation. I find that the wild yeast from this site has a very unique character. This sauvignon blanc is all about the wild yeast, high solids ferment, aging on yeast lees and a little bit of the nuances that come from the Kēkerengū area. I am crafting a wine with a very linear, focused structure around which I can build beautiful textures.”

  • 2015 Lune d’Or, Clos des LunesWhite Wine

2015 Lune d’Or, Clos des Lunes

    £4250

Located in Sauternes, on one of the greatest white wine terroirs in France, the Clos des Lunes is a magnificent rolling vineyard planted with old sémillon and sauvignon blanc vines. On very old vines, some perfectly golden clusters are chosen and delicately sorted grain by grain, by expert hands.

The wine is pale gold in the glass – which is rather apt considering the name!  The nose is very expressive with fragrances of tangerine, lemon and grapefruit with wafts of fresh hay and chamomile.  Together these aromas give a mouthwatering sensation.  This leads into the racy palate that is complex, textural – preserved lemons, stone fruits and a delicious passion fruit taste.   The finish is long luscious and minerally.

2020 Sancerre Silex, J. de Villebois

    £4250

In the glass Striking, aromatic notes of flint, blackcurrant and lemon lead to a mineral-rich palate. Beautifully balanced with a crisp, refreshing finish.

The sought-after Silex soils make up just 20% of the Sancerre appellation and are considered as ‘early-ripening soil’ as the flinty stones capture the heat from the sun during the day and radiate it at night, which helps to accelerate the maturity of the grapes. This is beneficial is such a cool, continental climate, where the Sauvignon Blanc retains its hallmark acidity, as it offers balance to the wines. The grapes for this cuvée come from hillside plots, where the vines are over 35 years old.

    2005 Chateau Doisy-Vedrines 2eme Cru Classe, Barsac

    £4750

This delightful golden sweetie will provide the perfect pairing to sweet puddings such as Tarte Tatin and blue cheeses like Roquefort. The Chevaliers de Védrines who owned this property for centuries (until 1840) would be proud of the job that the Castéja family have done here.

A terrific, fine, perfumed nose with a lifting touch of botrytis acts as the impressive entrée for a wonderfully pure Sauternes of extraordinary length.
