  • 2018 Châteauneuf-du-Pape ‘Cuvée Barberini’, Domaine de la SolitudeRed Wine

2018 Châteauneuf-du-Pape ‘Cuvée Barberini’, Domaine de la Solitude

    £5500

Domaine de la Solitude’s wines are renowned for their characteristic elegance whilst expressing the true origins of their terroir.

The Cuvée Barberini is a tribute to the founding fathers of the Estate and is made only in the best years from the best parcels of old vines of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah.   This Domaine has one of the best terroirs in Châteauneuf-du-Pape with its abundance of rounded quartzite stones, known as “Galet Roulés” terroir.  These stones absorb heat during the day then radiate it at night, promoting full grape maturity. The grapes are manually harvested, once each variety has reached phenological ripeness.    2018 is fantastic Rhône vintage for reds and this wine is no exception.   Well textured, ripe, full-bodied – delivering rich black fruits, mocha expresso and a subtle hint of smoke. Smooth on the palate with integrated tannins and a lingering finish, this is a traditional and elegant Châteauneuf.

In 2018 the Châteauneuf producers have made very high quality, focused wines, which are open and expressive with a gorgeously appealing fruit profile. The combination of small yields, ripe fruit and tannins also means that these wines have the ageing potential of the best years.

  • 2016 `Voices of Angels` Shiraz, Charles MeltonRed Wine

    2016 `Voices of Angels` Shiraz, Charles Melton

    £6200

This wine is sourced from the Mount Pleasant vineyard which sits on the boundary of Eden Valley and the Adelaide Hills. Technically, this wine is from the Adelaide Hills, but spiritually the fruit is Eden Valley.

In the glass, it has an almost polished, deep crimson colour with the typical cool site brightness. Quite evident high-quality French oak showing at the moment, but this youthful stage will pass, with the fruit increasing in volume and complexity over the next few years. The wine spent a full 29 months ageing on lees to develop a real roundness and tongue coating glycerol sweetness. The density of structure rather than the sheer size is a commanding feature of this vintage and this wine illustrates that perfectly.

  • 2017`Grains of Paradise` Shiraz, Charles MeltonRed Wine

2017`Grains of Paradise` Shiraz, Charles Melton

    £6300

A wonderful expression of the traditional Barossa style. Grains of Paradise has dark, sweet aromas of chocolate, vanilla, spicy fruit cake and mocha. These lead to a rich and dense palate with weighty tannin and a smooth finish.

Shiraz grapes for the ‘Grains of Paradise’ come from the finest vineyard sites in the Barossa. For the 2017 vintage, much of the fruit was sourced from Charlie’s Nitschke vineyard in Krondorf. Relatively youthful at 20 years old, this vineyard produces some quality Shiraz. Most of the vineyard sits on loam and red clay; the vines are dry grown and spur pruned.

  • 2011 Patrina Syrah, Alban Vineyards Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

    2011 Patrina Syrah, Alban Vineyards

    £6500

John Alban is more than a wine producer: Robert Parker has described him as the “spiritual and qualitative leader of the Rhône Ranger movement”: his impact on wine production in California is not to be understated.  Established in 1989, Alban Vineyards represents California’s first winery and vineyard dedicated exclusively to the varietals of the Rhône at a time when anything that was neither Cabernet nor Chardonnay was barely grown in California, Alban was a groundbreaking project and has gone on to be regarded as one of the U.S.A’s best and most influential producers.

A deliciously rich and complex wine, the 2011 Patrina hits the ideal balance between the New and Old World ways of winemaking. Dark and brooding in the glass, the bouquet is understated with earthy notes of blackberry and cherry. As it moves across the palate it reveals an array of dark berries, plum, cassis, and Indian spices. The finish includes dark cocoa delicately balanced on a framework of silky tannins.

  • 2009 Le Sol, Craggy Range Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

    2009 Le Sol, Craggy Range

    £8500

Le Sol is always a magnificent wine and a moment in time but this 09 is something rather special.  An opaque black core with a dark garnet rim. Redolent with black cherry, blueberry, melted liquorice, wild thyme and, of course, black pepper. This is intensely flavoured with layers of fine ripe tannin. The flavours just go on and on. A remarkable vintage.

Le Sol (french: the soil) is born of the renowned Gimblett Gravels viticultural appellation with its gravelly soils attracting the sun in summer and insulating the vines in winter. The vines are planted in the stoniest parts of the vineyard to a heritage clone of Syrah brought to New Zealand in the 1840s. Intensively hand managed, the grapes reveal a deep and dark Syrah with purple hues. Le Sol is always aromatically pure with a luscious yet elegant mid-palate and a distinctive fine tannin finish.
