  • 2020 ‘Summer’ Wild Ferment Sauvignon Blanc, Harry Hartman White Wine

2020 ‘Summer’ Wild Ferment Sauvignon Blanc, Harry Hartman

    £2250

This knockout wild Ferment Sauvignon Blanc from Harry Hartman Wines is made from fruit picked in the premium regions of Elgin and Bot River.  Elgin fruit has a higher level of acidity adding to the more citrus notes and making the wine more linear. Botrivier fruit is more rounded, with bigger tropical notes.

In the glass, the wine paints a picture of a basket filled with freshly picked kiwi and yellow plums. The fruit is clean and welcoming, backed with a perpetual herbaceous note that blows off as the wine evolves in your glass, leaving hints of spice and a creamy note of old-fashioned lemon candy. The palate is a continuation of the nose with that almond skin character giving way to a briny texture and taut acidity leaping over your tongue.

  • 2016 Chenin/Verdelho, Momento White Wine

    2016 Chenin/Verdelho, Momento

    £2450
Marelise Niemann, winemaker and owner of Momento thinks that Chenin Blanc without Verdelho is like dancing without music.
Verdelho adds the zing and zest to the blend, giving it that extra twist of freshness, energy and rhythm. The Chenin blanc grapes come from 40-year-old, dry land farmed bush vines in the Swartland, and a 36-year-old vineyard from Bot River, called ‘Langbene’ (Long legs) – named after the unique and extremely long trunks of the vines.  The Verdelho grapes come from Voor-Paardeberg, grown in decomposed granite and clay as well as a vineyard in Bot River grown in Bokkeveld shale. The decomposed granite soils produce a rich, generous and broader palate, while the shale and clay soil from Bot River produces an austere, focused, and texture driven wine. A combination of these two regions, together with the Verdelho that adds the freshness, combine to create a well-balanced wine, both rich and generous and elegant and well-poised, with a mineral focus and bright acidity.

A nose of white peach, lemon rind and jasmine with green melon, green apple and a crystalline, wet stone minerality adding freshness and focus. Crunchy, puckering acidity supports a full-bodied, mouth-coating palate with brioche and tart lemon curd leading to a long, pithy finish.

  • 2016 Tinta Barocca, Momento Red Wine

    2016 Tinta Barocca, Momento

    £2750

Cherries, cassis, roses and cinnamon joined by porcini mushroom and soy make this an alluring and complex nose added to by the ripe phenolic grip and textured coating palate. The balance between lifted and bright primary red fruit notes and that savoury gravitas mimics high-end Pinot Noir. Tightly wound and complex, this wine can age beyond 2025.

This wine is a tribute to all old vine Tinta Baroccas of South Africa, which for a long time have supported some beautifully fine ‘red blends’ but seldom got the recognition they deserve. A blend of three special vineyards all aged over 40 years – of origin Bot River, Stellenbosch and Swartland – grown on a soil combination of Bokkeveld shale, decomposed granite and clay.
