Six Reds to Carry You Into Autumn – Warm days, cool nights. Meet six reds that bring energy, depth, and versatility to the season.

September brings that in-between moment, the days still glow with late-summer warmth, while evenings cool and hint at autumn. It’s the perfect time for reds with freshness and balance: wines that feel bright and lively with food in the afternoon, yet carry enough depth to satisfy as the night draws in. Our Red Refresh collection captures exactly that mood, with six hand-picked bottles ready for the season’s shift.

The Wines

2022 ‘Délèra’ Bardolino DOC, Guerrieri Rizzardi
Or as we call it – “The Lake Breeze Red”

Light, fresh, and joyfully drinkable, this Bardolino captures the easy charm of Veneto reds. Ruby in colour with a delicate perfume of cherries, redcurrants, and a hint of spice, the palate is silky and refreshing – red berry fruit with subtle herbal notes and a clean, lifted finish. Chill it slightly for even more verve.

For when: the sun’s still out and the food is simple but perfect.
Pairs with: antipasti, grilled vegetables, or a pizza on the terrace.
If this wine were a mood, it’d be an afternoon bike ride that somehow ends with dinner by the lake.

Guerrieri Rizzardi is one of the historic estates of Bardolino and Valpolicella, with centuries of winemaking heritage and vineyards on the shores of Lake Garda. Their Délèra cuvée showcases the lighter side of Corvina, offering brightness, balance, and drinkability that reflects the region’s breezy, lakeside terroir.

2022 Morgon ‘Cuvée Classique’, Domaine Jean Foillard
Or as we call it – “The Cult Classic”

Deep, pure, and effortlessly expressive, this is benchmark Beaujolais from one of the masters. Bursting with aromas of black cherries, ripe raspberry, and violet, with hints of spice and granite earth. On the palate, it’s supple yet structured – juicy red fruit framed by mineral precision and fine tannins. Long, lifted, and quietly complex.

For when: you want a red that’s soulful without being showy.
Pairs with: charcuterie, roast chicken, or a night when conversation matters as much as the wine.
If this wine were a film, it’d be a French New Wave classic – timeless, subtle, and cooler than you remembered.

Jean Foillard is one of the legendary “Gang of Four” producers who transformed Beaujolais in the 1980s with a return to old-vine vineyards, organic farming, and minimal intervention. His wines from Morgon are cult favourites: vibrant, alive, and authentic expressions of Gamay grown on granite soils.

2023 Malbec, Luigi Bosca, Mendoza
Or as we call it – “The Big Heart”

Dark, generous, and full of Mendoza sunshine, this Malbec opens with aromas of blackberry, plum, and spice, wrapped in notes of cocoa and vanilla. The palate is rich but polished – layers of black fruit and dark chocolate balanced by smooth tannins and a lingering finish. Bold but never brash.

For when: you’re grilling steaks, or just need a red with presence.
Pairs with: ribeye, empanadas, or a stormy evening indoors.
If this wine were a friend, it’d be the one who always brings the big stories – and the big hugs.

Luigi Bosca is one of Argentina’s most historic and respected wineries, founded in 1901 and still family-owned. With high-altitude vineyards in Mendoza and a focus on purity and balance, they’ve become a benchmark name for Malbec worldwide.

2019 ‘Plume’ Pinot Noir, Lake Chalice, Marlborough
Or as we call it – “The Featherlight Charmer”

Elegant and graceful, this Pinot Noir shows Marlborough’s cool-climate finesse. Aromas of wild strawberry, cherry, and a touch of spice lead into a silky palate with soft tannins and gentle earthy undertones. Light on its feet yet quietly persistent, finishing long and refined.

For when: the evening calls for something subtle but special.
Pairs with: duck, mushroom risotto, or just a quiet night in.
If this wine were a poem, it’d be a haiku – delicate, balanced, and leaving space for reflection.

Lake Chalice is an independent winery in Marlborough, New Zealand, established in 1989. Their Plume series is the flagship, showcasing hand-selected fruit from their best sites with a focus on purity, precision, and age-worthy elegance.

2022 Sousón, Ailalá, Ribeiro
Or as we call it – “The Wild Card”

Inky, vibrant, and bursting with energy, this Galician red is made from the native Sousón grape. Aromas of blackberry, blueberry, and violets mingle with hints of spice and smoky earth. On the palate, it’s fresh, juicy, and electric – dark fruit layered over bright acidity and firm but fine tannins. A red with bite and personality.

For when: you want something different, exciting, a bit edgy.
Pairs with: grilled octopus, tapas, or an adventurous crowd.
If this wine were a song, it’d be a flamenco riff – sharp, fiery, unforgettable.

Ailalá Atlántica is a young, dynamic winery in Ribeiro, Galicia, focused on native varieties and fresh, Atlantic-influenced wines. Their Sousón captures the spirit of modern Galicia – authentic, vibrant, and unapologetically distinctive.

2023 Côtes du Rhône ‘Le Temps est Venu’, Stéphane Ogier
Or as we call it – “The Time is Now”

Juicy, bold, and brimming with Rhône charm, this red blends Grenache and Syrah in a crowd-pleasing but polished style. Aromas of ripe blackberry, black cherry, and peppery spice flow into a supple palate of dark fruit, herbs, and a touch of liquorice. Medium-bodied with silky tannins and a warming finish.

For when: the table is full and laughter’s loud.
Pairs with: lamb chops, cassoulet, or anything that feeds a crowd.
If this wine were a guest, it’d show up early, bring extra food, and stay till the candles burn out.

Stéphane Ogier is one of the Rhône’s star winemakers, best known for his benchmark Côte-Rôtie. Le Temps est Venu is his project to bring that same precision and elegance to a more accessible Côtes du Rhône – sourced from carefully selected vineyards and made with the same meticulous care as his top wines.

2014 Côte-Rôtie, Maison Rouge, Georges Vernay

£11000

Although Domaine Georges Vernay has built its reputation around its excellent Condrieu white wines, its reds should not be neglected, especially ones from the Côte-Rôtie. From a 5 ha plot of vines, Vernay’s Côte-Rôtie is amongst the most exceptional wines from the same appellation. Thanks to a perfectly mastered elegant wine style, Christine Vernay successfully expresses the elegance and depth of syrah; never over maturing or over ageing.

The name of the wine refers to a small red house situated at the foot of this impressively steep “lieu dit” or registered plot of ‘Maison Rouge’. The vineyards are made up of two hectares of sandy, granite terraces located in the southern part of the appellation. Trained according to the Guyot simple method, the vines have an average age of 50 years and they have been planted to a density of 10,000 vines per hectare.

2019 Pinot Noir ‘Terra de Promissio’, Senses

£11000

A rich, structured Pinot Noir with complex aromas of smoky red and black fruits, roasted herbs, conifer forest and exotic spice through to a palate of impeccable balance.

2019 stands out as one of the more exceptional vintages in recent memory. Cooler temperatures and stable weather throughout the growing season allowed for slow maturation of flavours without any heat events spiking sugar accumulation in the berries. Although 2019 also saw the devastating Kincade fire in Sonoma County, the fruit was harvested by then, so the smoke did not affect the grapes.

The grapes come from Charles and Diana Karren’s vineyard, a couple who are incredibly passionate about growing grapes. The single vineyard ‘Terra de Promissio’ translates as ‘the Land of Promise’ and it has an ideal terroir for growing Pinot Noir. Located in the Petaluma Gap subregion, the combination of the sandy loam and Adobe clay soils, the south-westerly sun exposure, hill elevation, vine density of 5×7’ spacing and the wind and fog of the Petaluma Gap, allows the grapes to have an extended hang time.

The Explore 4 ‘Pinot Noir’

£11185

Each Explore 4 case tackles a new theme: This one is a selection of Pinot Noirs that won’t break the bank.

Everyone loves Pinot Noir: It’s aromatic, supple, brightly fruited, and versatile. But, most of the time, it is also expensive. Here are some Pinot Noir bargains that are firm favourites with us because of their diversity and drinkability.

Pinot noir is widely planted and appears in nearly all winegrowing regions of the world, and given the grape varieties’ preference for cooler climates and poorer soils, we leaned toward lesser-known regions in both Hemispheres with those characteristics.

Here’s what’s in the case:

2020 Cruel Mistress Pinot Noir, Larry Cherubino, Great Southern, Western Australia

This gorgeous Pinot Noir from Larry Cherubino is made with fruit from the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The nose shows graphite and minerals, juicy black cherries with a hint of spicy oak plays a supporting role. The palate is softly textured, fresh and vibrant, the flavours of black cherry and earthy beetroot carried along by a fine acid finish.

2017 Pinot Noir ‘Eggo Filoso’, Zorzal, Gualtallary, Uco Valley, Argentina

Zorzal is an Argentinian boutique winery that is located at the highest point of the Uco Valley. Hailed as one of the most exclusive and well-regarded areas for viticulture in Argentina, the terroir is revealed in the Zorzal wines through a respectful, non-invasive winemaking process that puts austerity before exuberance and fruit before wood.

2018 South Coast Pinot Noir, Lismore, Greyton, Western Cape, South Africa

Californian Samantha O’Keefe has found paradise and the perfect terroir. Tucked into the foothills of a dramatic mountain range at the bottom of Africa, Lismore Estate Vineyards was born alongside her nascent family. A passionate vision, combined with vines planted at 300 metres, which are chilled by winter snow and nourished by the African summer sun, produces classic, cool climate wines which are rich, complex and lovingly hand-crafted. This 2018 is an elegant Pinot Noir delivering a complex bouquet of crushed rose petals, wild jasmine and fresh French herbs. The palate shows beautiful purity with layered red fruits, cranberry, raspberry, silky tannins and a long, savoury finish.

2018 Givry 1er Cru Rouge L’Empreinte, Domaine Joblot, Burgundy, France

One of the greatest producers in Southern Burgundy, the Joblot family has been producing fine wines for over four generations. These sought after wines have limited availability. L’Empreinte means ‘Footprint’ in French and this cuvée is the result of the best parcels of Domaine Joblot’s four Givry 1er Cru vineyards: Clos Maroles, Clos Du Cellier Aux Moines , Bois Chevaux and clos de la Servoisine.

• 2019 Brunello di Montalcino, Il Marroneto

2019 Brunello di Montalcino, Il Marroneto

£11200

Il Marroneto produce some of the purest and most perfumed expressions of Sangiovese made anywhere. Part of the secret lies in their prime location within Brunello’s traditional top class territory, situated at 450m above sea level with a cool northern exposure. Combined with the much lauded talents of gifted winemaker Alessandro Mori, and it’s clear to see why Il Marroneto are so highly coveted by Montalcino fans worldwide.

Alessandro Mori has always adopted a traditional approach, aiming for elegance and purity, without sacrificing depth or impact in his wines. Organic practices have been used in the vineyards since 1988, while natural fermentation occurs and there is neither fining nor filtration before bottling.

Both the Brunello and the Rosso start their life back at the winery as Brunellos, but during their maturation journey, Alessandro will make the decision to ‘declassify’ several bottis, resulting in a small release of Rosso di Montalcino. Prior to fermentation, the grapes spend around 2 days in steel with regular stirring followed by a slow fermentation and maceration for 3 weeks. The fruit is moved into large Slavonian and French Botti for 24 months then racked off and left to settle in steel for a brief period before bottling and release into the market.

2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District, Chimney Rock

£11700

The Chimney Rock Estate is blessed with a diversity of soil and topography that breeds complexity into the wines. To the east, steep hills and shallow soils bring density and power. On the north end, the proximity to the Palisades brings with it ripeness and purity of fruit. To the south, proximity to the bay brings breezes that add the nuance of cooler climate – adding hints of dried herbs and mint. It is this diversity that has enabled the winemakers to represent the quintessence of Stags Leap District – the tension between grace and power, the balance of finesse and muscle.

This wine opens in the glass with abundant aromas of blackcurrant and cherry, with hints of mocha, vanilla and floral. On the palate it is rich and savoury with plum and black cherry flavours and hints of dried fig, vanilla, and floral. On the palate this wine is smooth and viscous in the midpalate, full-bodied, and the tannin structure is firm but very polished. Recommend decanting.

2015 Valpolicella Superiore, Romano dal Forno

£12500

Legendary Romano Dal Forno has made wine at his family estate since 1983. His Amarone is the pinnacle of his production, but he uses the same care and attention to his Valpolicella, which is superior to many other producers’ Amarone. A traditional Corvina-based blend, fermented in steel before 24 months in oak barrique.

It is an Amarone in all but name, made entirely from appassimento berries – grapes dried for 20-25 days. The 2015 vintage was exceptional for Valpolicella, as in much of Northern Italy, bringing incredible levels of concentration to the wine. The wine has a deep crimson, rim-staining colour. The nose is rich, full of high-toned aromatics, neroli floral scents, dried cherry, raisins and sweeter vanilla tones. The palate is impressively structured, the oak tannins melding with the rich red cherry fruit, bringing great depth to the palate. There is a great balance of flavours beyond the sweet, dried fruit, with savoury fresh tobacco and sweeter almond pastry notes. Despite the immense concentration, there is plenty of acidity keeping the palate vibrant. With such richness and structure, this will give a good 10-15 years’ drinking pleasure.

£12950

A rich, concentrated Pinot Noir with aromas of black raspberries and pomegranate layered with hints of lavender, rose oil and wild sage. Black fruits and mineral notes lead to an earthy finish with a floral lift.

The holistic wines are the result of a magnificent, dynamic terroir and the best winegrowing and winemaking techniques and practices, coupled with superlative work to protect and enhance the environment, concern for human and social development, and a focus on art and architecture.
