2023 Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, Auntsfield

    £1895

The 2023 Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc from Auntsfield Estate is a vibrant and textured expression of Marlborough’s first and most historic vineyard. Established in 1892, Auntsfield carries the legacy of pioneering winemaking in the region, and today the Cowley family continues to craft wines that are deeply rooted in the estate’s unique terroir. Located in the Southern Valleys, the vineyard’s ancient Greywacke rock and Loess clay soils impart a distinctive minerality, texture, and intensity to the fruit, shaping wines with depth and character. Auntsfield’s approach to Sauvignon Blanc emphasises complexity and mouthfeel, producing wines that go beyond the typical Marlborough style.

Pale straw in the glass, the 2023 Sauvignon Blanc bursts with lifted, pure aromas of fresh passionfruit, ripe citrus, and lime, enhanced by layers of lemongrass, dried herbs, papaya, and a touch of jalapeño for added aromatic intrigue. On the palate, the wine is both powerful and elegant, with ripe flavours of passionfruit juice and white peach seamlessly interwoven with citrus elements of lime zest and mandarin pith. There is remarkable concentration and weight, carried by a taut structure and mineral backbone that creates a lively, balanced tension. The result is a Sauvignon Blanc with not only expressive aromatics and bright fruit, but also a refined, textural finish that lingers.

2023 Noble Riesling ‘Godfreys Creek Reserve’, Saint Clair, 375ml

    £1950

Saint Clair Godfrey’s Creek Noble Reserve Riesling is a deliciously complex dessert wine, with a bouquet of clover honey, cinnamon and beeswax. Luscious and silky on the palate with rich orange, apricot and cocoa notes leading to a long, smooth finish.

The fruit for Godfrey’s Creek is grown in the heart of the Marlborough Valley. The vineyard is situated on the Wairau Valley floor, where it experiences early morning dew and light afternoon breezes; a successful combination in the production of Noble Riesling. Select grape bunches were left to hang on the vine until late in the season, promoting raisining and botrytis. The grapes were hand-harvested once the desired level of sugar had been reached. This wine is only made in vintages when the season facilitates the extra hanging time required for the growth of botrytis on the grapes. The vineyard is cultivated according to sustainable practices and is accredited to Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand.

Generous and full, layered with grapefruit and blackcurrant, this wine is underpinned by salt and mineral notes through to a long, concentrated finish.

The grapes are sourced from a single vineyard in the rich loamy soils of the Dillons Point area of Marlborough’s Lower Wairau Valley. Shaped by a slow convergence of tectonic plates, the Wairau Valley offers a veritable patchwork of contrasting soil types linking the Alps in the west with the Pacific Ocean in the east. The eastern flood plain soils are nutrient-rich silty loam, renowned for delivering Marlborough’s iconic tropical flavoured Sauvignon Blanc. In order to capture the maximum expression of regional characteristics, the pruning, irrigation and canopy management is dictated by each variety and by each block of land.

The Chianti Classico area is characterised by a Mediterranean climate and the soil, which is called “Galestro”, is rich in clay and large stones. The soils in this vineyard are made up of a high proportion of heavy clay- approximately 30%- which is renowned for its cooling properties and water retention for the vine, as well as for producing bold wines from the Sangiovese grape. Planted at a density of 5,600 vines per hectare, the vines are pruned according to the Single Guyot method which ensures low yields of approximately 52 hectolitres per hectare. Particular attention is paid to the direction in which the vines are planted; they are all south-facing, ensuring maximum exposure to the sun throughout the day.

  • Offer <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2023-sauvignon-blanc-reserve-cape-point-vineyards/">2023 Sauvignon Blanc Reserve, Cape Point Vineyards</a> White Wine

2023 Sauvignon Blanc Reserve, Cape Point Vineyards

Original price was: £2495.Current price is: £1995. 20% saving

An elegant Sauvignon Blanc with aromas of floral spice, cardamom and white pepper. Richly textured with generous notes of citrus and ripe nectarine through to the characteristic, lengthy mineral edge on the finish.

The estate is positioned on the narrow Cape Peninsula, where the confluence of sea breezes from the cold Atlantic Ocean, less than one mile away, and the southeasterly breezes from False Bay, create ideal conditions for the slow ripening of grapes. The grapes for this wine are hand-selected from three sea-facing vineyard parcels in the mid-levels of the estate, where a combination of the fresh breezes and decomposed granite soils result in a wine with a distinct mineral edge. The breezes, along with good canopy management, help to keep the vines healthy and diseases at bay, reducing the need for treatments. When the winds are strong, they also control the vine’s vigour and encourage a second suckering. The topography of the Noordhoek amphitheatre is also influential. It was carved from the Silvermine mountain over time, and as a result the soils of the estate vineyards are rich with decomposed granite, limestone and kaolin, imbuing the wines with their signature mineral quality.

The climate here is classic Mediterranean with the additional influence of the Mistral winds. The terroir sits on an alluvial plateau with calcareous gravel, which retains water, helping to preserve the vines during the hot and often arid summer months.
