    2023 The Chocolate Block, Boekenhoutskloof

    £2495

The 2023 vintage of The Chocolate Block continues to build on its legacy as one of South Africa’s most iconic and sought-after red blends. Crafted predominantly from Syrah, with carefully selected additions of Grenache, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Viognier (blend proportions vary annually), this cult-status wine showcases Boekenhoutskloof’s mastery in balancing innovation and consistency. Only 4,043 barrels were produced, further enhancing its rarity and appeal.

In the glass, the wine opens with an intensely aromatic bouquet of blackberries, blueberries, and ripe bramble fruit, intertwined with black olive tapenade, crushed violets, and a dusting of white pepper and coriander seed. The palate is rich yet polished, delivering layers of dark berry fruit, red liquorice, and cherry compote, underscored by hints of cherry tobacco and exotic spice.

Despite its medium to full body, the wine remains elegant and focused, with vibrant acidity and silky tannins that glide across the palate. The finish is long, dry, and laced with a touch of savoury complexity, reflecting both the terroir and meticulous craftsmanship behind the blend.

A compelling, age-worthy red that drinks beautifully now but will reward cellaring over the next 5–8 years. Ideal with flame-grilled meats, game dishes, or rich Mediterranean fare.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2022-koshu-private-reserve-grace-winery/">2023 Koshu Private Reserve, Grace Winery</a> White Wine

2023 Koshu Private Reserve, Grace Winery

    £2595

This wine is made from Japan’s most important indigenous grape variety, Koshu, which is grown in Japan’s top Koshu producing region: Katsunuma.

Pure, sublimely crisp and mineral in style, this wine is fresh and elegant with rich aromas of fresh pear, white peach, honeysuckle, rosemary, clove and mineral stone notes. Dry, with a lively palate of crisp, ripe fruits and a charming acidity which offers the wine great backbone, through to a hint of umami on the finish.

Situated at the eastern end of the Kofu basin, the Katsunuma’s area is an alluvial fan with well-drained soils, an area which has been suitable for viticulture since ancient times. The characteristic, intricate terrain with its complex, volcanic soils produces wines that distinguish the sense of place. The vines are grown at elevations of above 400 metres; these high- altitude, hilly areas such as the Toriihira in Katsunuma, Hishiyama and Fukasawa districts produce limited yields, concentrated flavours and balancing acidity, due to the diurnal temperature swings. Traditional trellis pruning has been cast aside in favour of a modern long cordon training system which helps to control yields; concentrating flavours and sugars to balance the high acidity that occurs naturally in this variety. In order to reduce the effects of autumn rain, each bunch is covered with an umbrella and the fruit is hand-picked at optimal maturity.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2023-bel-canto-dry-riesling-pegasus-bay/">2023 Bel Canto Dry Riesling, Pegasus Bay</a> White Wine

2023 Bel Canto Dry Riesling, Pegasus Bay

    £2695

Pegasus Bay is a pioneering, family-owned estate in the Waipara Valley of North Canterbury, established by the Donaldson family in the 1980s. With a strong focus on sustainable viticulture and low-intervention winemaking, the estate has gained international recognition for producing wines of depth, structure, and individuality.

‘Bel Canto’ is a reserve-style expression crafted only in exceptional vintages, where the grapes are allowed extended hang time and often develop noble botrytis. This approach, along with wild fermentation and ageing on lees, allows the wine to develop remarkable texture, intensity, and age-worthiness while retaining freshness and vibrancy.

The 2023 ‘Bel Canto’ opens with a luminous golden hue, hinting at the richness and concentration to come. Aromatically dynamic, the wine bursts with a vibrant interplay of tropical and citrus notes, pineapple, mango, and orange blossom lead the charge, followed by layers of quince, kumquat, and a subtle minerality reminiscent of wet river stones. On the palate, it strikes a beautiful balance between generosity and precision. A plush, textural mid-palate is enlivened by a cheeky whip of acidity and ripe phenolic grip, giving the wine both structure and energy. These elements funnel together into a persistent, mouthwatering finish that lingers with both elegance and intensity.

    £2700

Sourced from six carefully selected vineyard sites in the Kumeu region, the 2023 Estate Chardonnay continues Kumeu River’s tradition of crafting benchmark Chardonnay that consistently overdelivers on elegance and precision.

The wine opens with fragrant aromas of lemon zest, subtle white peach and a delicate floral lift. On the palate, it is beautifully poised and finely textured, showing citrus-driven purity supported by understated oak influence – no new barrels were used, allowing the fruit and minerality to take centre stage. A silky mouthfeel and vibrant acidity lead to a clean, persistent finish with signature Kumeu finesse.

Elegant and immediately drinkable, the 2023 Estate Chardonnay also has the structure to age gracefully over the next 4–6 years.

2023 Koshu Private Reserve ‘Hishiyama Vineyard’, Grace Winery

    £2775

Made from Japan’s most important indigenous grape variety: Koshu.  Complex and layered aromas of green apple and lime are complemented by grassy notes, fennel, flint and coriander. This is bone dry and smooth on the tightly knitted palate with a tongue-tensing acidity enveloping the fruit through to a deliciously fresh and textured finish.

The grapes for the Hishiyama Private Reserve are grown in a vineyard with a complex granitic soil structure. The warm climate promotes healthy grapes with a good phenolic maturity at harvest time. A modern long cordon training system is being used as an alternative to the traditional trellising methods. Significant advances have been made in limiting yields and focussing on canopy management. These endeavours have concentrated flavours and sugars, balancing the high acidity that occurs naturally in this variety.
