2023 ‘Amfora’ Orange Wine, Villa Noria

    £2295

An aromatic orange wine with delicate floral notes of rose, quince and apple. The palate is fresh, fruity and harmonious, finishing with a little grip, leaving an impression of pleasant tension.

The grapes for the Amfòra cuvée come from vineyards between the Mediterranean Sea and the mountainous foothills. The Mediterranean climate, with its warm, dry summers and relatively mild winters, offers the vines excellent conditions in which to flourish. The high number of sunshine hours results in wines that are powerful, rich and aromatic, but also fresh due to the tempering effects of the Mediterranean Sea. The soils are made up mostly of clay-limestone and basaltic soil; the latter is a volcanic soil formed from ancient lava, which contains high proportions of iron and imparts a distinctive minerality to the wine. The vineyard is certified organic and HVE Level 3 certified for sustainability. The vines are surrounded by hedges to protect them from pesticide treatments in the neighbouring fields and also to provide a refuge for the wildlife, enhancing biodiversity. Harvested in the cool of the night to retain freshness and at high ripeness levels to avoid any green flavours or bitterness.

Rooted in the rugged beauty of the Piekenierskloof plateau and inspired by the philosophy of Holism – where every element is interconnected and greater than the sum of its parts – this wine is an expressive and thoughtful take on Garnacha. From old bush vines planted at over 600 metres altitude, the fruit benefits from the plateau’s cooling ocean mists and extreme growing conditions, resulting in grapes of remarkable character and resilience.

In the glass, the 2023 Holism Garnacha is a study in elegance and vitality. Pale ruby in colour, it reveals aromas of wild strawberries, red cherries, and a hint of rose petal, layered with subtle earthy and herbal undertones. The palate is bright, pure, and vibrant, showcasing a light-bodied style with a crunchy acidity, fine tannins, and a gentle spiciness that adds depth without overpowering.

This is not your typical Grenache. Rather than bold and heady, Holism Garnacha is delicate, refined, and food-friendly, expressing the harmony between vine, soil, and sky – an authentic reflection of the Swartland’s northern frontier.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2023-estate-white-encruzado-soito/">2023 Estate White’ Encruzado, Soito</a>

    2023 Estate White’ Encruzado, Soito

    £2395

A refreshing, elegant wine from the Encruzado variety, showing complex notes of lemon balm, orange blossom and juicy white fruits, with layers of citrus. Creamy, but beautifully balanced by a crisp finish.

The Dão region is located in Beira, central northern Portugal, flanked by the mountain chains of Caramulo, Montemuro, Buçaco and Estrela, which offer protection from the prevailing winds. Within this basin configuration, there is a wide range of micro-climates strongly influenced by relatively steep valleys carved out by the Mondego, Alva and Dão Rivers and their numerous tributaries. The vineyards range from 200 to 700 metres above sea level, and the white varieties are planted on elevated, terraced slopes, where they benefit from cooler microclimates. The wide diurnal temperature shifts of up to 20°C, ensure the fruit is endowed with ample natural acidity; Dão wines are renowned for their freshness. The soils are granite-dominated sands, with particles of feldspar, quartz and mica which sparkle in the vineyards. They are lean, free-draining and relatively infertile soils, which force the vines to struggle, resulting in complex wines.

2023 Sauvignon Blanc Reserve, Cape Point Vineyards

    £2495

An elegant Sauvignon Blanc with aromas of floral spice, cardamom and white pepper. Richly textured with generous notes of citrus and ripe nectarine through to the characteristic, lengthy mineral edge on the finish.

The estate is positioned on the narrow Cape Peninsula, where the confluence of sea breezes from the cold Atlantic Ocean, less than one mile away, and the southeasterly breezes from False Bay, create ideal conditions for the slow ripening of grapes. The grapes for this wine are hand-selected from three sea-facing vineyard parcels in the mid-levels of the estate, where a combination of the fresh breezes and decomposed granite soils result in a wine with a distinct mineral edge. The breezes, along with good canopy management, help to keep the vines healthy and diseases at bay, reducing the need for treatments. When the winds are strong, they also control the vine’s vigour and encourage a second suckering. The topography of the Noordhoek amphitheatre is also influential. It was carved from the Silvermine mountain over time, and as a result the soils of the estate vineyards are rich with decomposed granite, limestone and kaolin, imbuing the wines with their signature mineral quality.

In the glass, the wine opens with an intensely aromatic bouquet of blackberries, blueberries, and ripe bramble fruit, intertwined with black olive tapenade, crushed violets, and a dusting of white pepper and coriander seed. The palate is rich yet polished, delivering layers of dark berry fruit, red liquorice, and cherry compote, underscored by hints of cherry tobacco and exotic spice.

    2022 Malbec, El Enemigo

    £2495

El Enemigo is the collaborative venture of Adrianna Catena, daughter of Nicolás Catena, and Alejandro Vigil, renowned Chief Winemaker at Bodega Catena Zapata. Located at the southern foothills of Mendoza’s impressive Andes range, aptly named Piedemonte al Sur, the estate sources fruit from vineyards planted as early as 1986, at elevations between 1,400 and 1,500 m above sea level. This high-altitude terroir, combined with calcareous, rocky, sandy-loam soils, creates ideal conditions for crafting Malbecs of yin-yang power and elegance.

“El Enemigo”, Spanish for “The Enemy”, symbolises the internal battle every winemaker faces amid vineyard challenges and high-altitude conditions. It is also a reflection of the winemaking duo’s ambition to craft Argentine wines that rival Europe’s finest. The project is a modern homage to Argentine heritage, blending Catena’s historical legacy with Vigil’s winemaking mastery.

In the glass, the 2022 Malbec shines with bright purple hues. The aromatics combine ripe black cherry, plum, and darker berry fruit, layered with herbal notes of thyme and a touch of violet. On the palate, it is rich, fluid, and impeccably balanced, plush yet structured. Silky tannins and vibrant acidity support flavours of blackberry, black cherry, baking spice, and gently savoury earth. The finish is long, refined, and satisfying, with an elegant tannic grip.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2022-koshu-private-reserve-grace-winery/">2023 Koshu Private Reserve, Grace Winery</a>

2023 Koshu Private Reserve, Grace Winery

    £2595

This wine is made from Japan’s most important indigenous grape variety, Koshu, which is grown in Japan’s top Koshu producing region: Katsunuma.

Pure, sublimely crisp and mineral in style, this wine is fresh and elegant with rich aromas of fresh pear, white peach, honeysuckle, rosemary, clove and mineral stone notes. Dry, with a lively palate of crisp, ripe fruits and a charming acidity which offers the wine great backbone, through to a hint of umami on the finish.

Situated at the eastern end of the Kofu basin, the Katsunuma’s area is an alluvial fan with well-drained soils, an area which has been suitable for viticulture since ancient times. The characteristic, intricate terrain with its complex, volcanic soils produces wines that distinguish the sense of place. The vines are grown at elevations of above 400 metres; these high- altitude, hilly areas such as the Toriihira in Katsunuma, Hishiyama and Fukasawa districts produce limited yields, concentrated flavours and balancing acidity, due to the diurnal temperature swings. Traditional trellis pruning has been cast aside in favour of a modern long cordon training system which helps to control yields; concentrating flavours and sugars to balance the high acidity that occurs naturally in this variety. In order to reduce the effects of autumn rain, each bunch is covered with an umbrella and the fruit is hand-picked at optimal maturity.
