2021 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru, Georges Lignier

    £31500

Situated in the heart of Morey-Saint-Denis, Domaine Georges Lignier is a fifth-generation family estate with a rich Burgundian heritage. Under the stewardship of Benoît Stehly, great-nephew of Georges Lignier, the domaine has become known for its classical, terroir-expressive Pinot Noir. With over 16 hectares of prime vineyard holdings, including several prestigious Grand Crus such as Clos de la Roche, Clos Saint-Denis, and Bonnes-Mares, the estate blends traditional techniques with a deep respect for nature and site.

Bonnes-Mares is one of Burgundy’s most celebrated Grand Crus, straddling the border between Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis. Known for its powerful structure and ageing potential, this site produces wines of depth, minerality, and aromatic finesse. Domaine Georges Lignier’s parcel lies within the Morey-Saint-Denis sector, giving their Bonnes-Mares an added layer of earthy, muscular intensity to complement its refined floral notes.

The 2021 vintage brings an ethereal quality to this formidable terroir. In the glass, it reveals a captivating bouquet of black cherry, wild raspberry, crushed rose petals, and subtle spice, accented by hints of graphite and forest floor. The palate is layered and powerful, yet remarkably precise and poised, with a dense core of dark red fruit framed by firm, ripe tannins and a vibrant mineral spine. Despite its youthful concentration, there’s a thread of elegance and lift that carries through to a long, noble finish.

The 2021 Bonnes-Mares from Georges Lignier is a wine of grand scale and understated grandeur, a true reflection of its terroir and a testament to the domaine’s thoughtful, time-honoured approach. Enjoy over the next 15 to 20 years, or decant in its youth for a glimpse of its extraordinary potential.

2002 Femme de Champagne Grand Cru Brut Nature, Champagne Duval-Leroy

    £35000

This cuvée is a reflection of the close collaboration between Carol Duval-Leroy, President of the House and Sandrine Logette-Jardin, Head Winemaker. It is only produced in the most exceptional years. Interestingly 20% of this wine was matured in used Château d’Yquem barrels, imparting texture and richness. The three revered Chardonnay Grand Cru sites of Oger, Cramant and Le Mesnil sur Oger and the Pinot Noir Grand Cru site of Ambonnay produced the grapes for this cuvée.

A Champagne of exceptional finesse and aromatic complexity, with brioche, hazelnut and tobacco nuances layered with minerality and wonderful depth of fruit expression. Silky and elegant with great concentration and superb length.

2002 was a year of exceptional maturity in Champagne. Dominant winds form the north and east kept the vineyards healthy. A dry year, which lead to significant water stress during the early summer, concentrating the flavours in the juice. Harvest took place mid-September and the musts were very rich in sugar, balanced by good acidity. 2002 is considered to be the vintage of the decade; one of magnificent quality.

1999 Chateau Haut-Brion Premier Cru Classe

    £47500

The 1999 Château Haut-Brion is intensely aromatic, rich and concentrated. A higher than usual Merlot content (60%) has resulted in a luscious, perfectly honed Haut-Brion with elegant mineral aromas and a unique complexity. Its strength lays in the finish, which is surprisingly long.

We recently (May 22) opened a bottle and were bowled over.   This is a monumental 1st growth from a supposedly unfashionable year, we tasted it over 2 hours and watched it evolve slowly with cascading notes of blackcurrant, blueberry, black cherry, caramel and forest floor. Fresh and pure on the palate, with a richness over-laying silky tannins. The finish is extraordinary – lengthy, seductive interwoven with subtle minerality and flavours of cedar and spice. Beautifully pure and generous.
