  • 2019 Carignan, OlifantsbergRed Wine

    2019 Carignan, Olifantsberg

    £1795

A complex expression of Carignan with notes of cured meat, spice, bay leaves and aniseed leading to dried cranberry and pomegranate flavours. Fresh on entry, with vibrant tannins and an elegant finish.

The vineyard is located on the slopes of the Olifantsberg Mountain Range where it endures wide diurnal temperature differences and strong winds. The grapes for this wine are from 100% bush vines grown on soils with a high percentage of shale and quartz. This is the rockiest vineyard on the farm and is planted at 350 metres above sea level. The vines are densely planted and endure a very dry and tough micro climate due to the high amount of rocks in the soil. The combination of rocky soils and high density planting, results in competition between the vines and in turn deeper root systems. The deep root systems enable the vine to develop a good buffer during drought conditions. The rocky soils also add more stress, so the vines deliver very small berries with a concentrated fruit, good body and fresh acidity.

    2019 Pinotage ‘1900’, Spioenkop Wines

The grapes come from the Bottelary Hills ward of Stellenbosch, in the Western Cape. The westerly facing vineyard is located at 300 metres’ elevation and is planted on granite and sandstone soils which offer free-draining properties. The climate is generally hot and dry; however maritime influences from False Bay to the south provide moderating sea-breezes, which help to keep the vineyards healthy and impart balancing freshness to the grapes. Pinotage, South Africa’s signature grape variety, is a crossing between Pinot Noir and Cinsault, (the latter was previously known as Hermitage in South Africa) from which it takes its name.

  • 2016 Cinsault, IllimisRed Wine

    2016 Cinsault, Illimis

    £2900

This is a stunning example of what Cinsault is capable of – intense turkish delight and cherry aromas. The tannins are soft, and it has loads of layered fruit and savoury notes.

From a dry-farmed plot of bush vines, planted in 1974, this is as delicate, fine and finessed as Cinsault gets.

Part of a trio of knock-out wines from Lucinda Heyns this year, the Illimis Cinsault all comes from Darling, a region that produces several of the best examples in the country. Lightly wooded, with 50% carbonic maceration, it’s a gentle, ethereal, floral style with fine tannins and some supporting grip.     93points – Tim Atkin MW, timatkin.com (September 2019)
