The vineyard is located on the slopes of the Olifantsberg Mountain Range where it endures wide diurnal temperature differences and strong winds. The grapes for this wine are from 100% bush vines grown on soils with a high percentage of shale and quartz. This is the rockiest vineyard on the farm and is planted at 350 metres above sea level. The vines are densely planted and endure a very dry and tough micro climate due to the high amount of rocks in the soil. The combination of rocky soils and high density planting, results in competition between the vines and in turn deeper root systems. The deep root systems enable the vine to develop a good buffer during drought conditions. The rocky soils also add more stress, so the vines deliver very small berries with a concentrated fruit, good body and fresh acidity.

2020 `Wanderer’s Heart` Cape Red Blend, Thorne & Daughters

The ‘Wanderer’s Heart’ is made from a blend of grapes from carefully selected growers across the Western Cape. The Mourvèdre is the fruit of 12-year-old vines planted on clay/gravel soils in Bot River. The Syrah also comes from Bot River from 12-year-old vines planted on shale. 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon ‘Midnight Elements’, Paserene

On the nose, you are met with dark notes of black cherry, cassis, and liquorice which make the mouth water instantly. There is a minerality that balances out the richness, with iodine and tannins making for an interesting first sip. You will also find flavours of woodsmoke and an earthiness that gives our Midnight a lingering, meaty finish.
The Midnight wine from Paserene’s Tulbagh wine estate and is the best example of this terroir’s propensity for developing grapes that have deep aromas and meaty flavours.

2019 Pinotage ‘1900’, Spioenkop Wines

The grapes come from the Bottelary Hills ward of Stellenbosch, in the Western Cape. The westerly facing vineyard is located at 300 metres’ elevation and is planted on granite and sandstone soils which offer free-draining properties. The climate is generally hot and dry; however maritime influences from False Bay to the south provide moderating sea-breezes, which help to keep the vineyards healthy and impart balancing freshness to the grapes. Pinotage, South Africa’s signature grape variety, is a crossing between Pinot Noir and Cinsault, (the latter was previously known as Hermitage in South Africa) from which it takes its name.

2016 Cinsault, Illimis

From a dry-farmed plot of bush vines, planted in 1974, this is as delicate, fine and finessed as Cinsault gets.
Part of a trio of knock-out wines from Lucinda Heyns this year, the Illimis Cinsault all comes from Darling, a region that produces several of the best examples in the country.
