We love Grenache at Wine Republic and were very excited when Illimis announced they had produced one! Winemaker and owner of Illimis, Lucinda Heyns has crafted an exceptional example of Grenache from a bush vine vineyard located in Wellington which is just north of Paarl in the Western Cape. The vineyard has shale soil with pockets of schist that Grenache loves and it delivers a wine with fine, chalky tannins, beautiful aromas of wild strawberries, lavender and rose petals. The palate is silky and supple with flavours of cherry, minerals, dried berries and wild herbs that lead into a long finish.

2020 Three, Constantia Glen
£3100Add to BasketThis delicious three-way blend was carefully crafted from grapes grown on the estate. It comprises 55% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Franc and 19% Cabernet Sauvignon and was matured for 17 months in 30% new, 50% second fill- and 20% third fill French oak barrels. The wine was not fined, but only lightly filtered prior to bottling to subtly mellow the rich tannin structure. This vintage shows the phenomenal structure and freshness that has become synonymous to the Constantia Glen THREE, but also has excellent concentration. This means that it can be enjoyed in its youth, yet it will certainly age and develop admirably for another 10-12 years under correct cellaring conditions.
In the glass, the nose of this wine has great expression with forthcoming red and black fruit aromas. Following these initial ripe fruit aromas, there is a complex collection of savoury notes woven with lingering flavours of tomato leaf, blackcurrant, and cedar. The palate shows great intensity and complexity of flavours with the dark fruit and distinct savoury notes on the nose following flawlessly onto that first sip. The fine-grain, elegant and velvety tannins really compliment the richness of the wine and promise great aging potential if stored under correct cellar conditions. This full-bodied blend has an earthy minerality and an inherent freshness that brings about a lingering, well-defined finish.
The vineyards that the grapes come from for this wine are tucked in the steep valley on the eastern side of Table Mountain. The climate is Mediterranean with cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean encouraging balance and complexity in the grapes, this combined with the cool southern slopes and deep mountain soils provide the ideal setting for the making of these top quality wines.

2019 Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon, Leeu Passant

These continue on the palate which has a silky texture and great structure from the fine tannins. The richness and power of the wine are balanced by freshness and finesse. Grapes for this wine is a blend of parcels from the cooler parts of Stellenbosch. One parcel is from 39-year-old, dry-farmed bush vine Cabernet Sauvignon, planted on deep alluvial soils of Firgrove. A further two parcels are planted on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain, while the final parcel is sourced from the Polkadraai Hills, where the soils are decomposed granite.

The 2019 Somesay Shiraz is an extraordinary wine made from small parcels of Syrah from the Cederberg and Stellenbosch regions.
Syrah is known to perform well across the diverse wine regions of South Africa, offering the robust fruit expression of a typical Shiraz or the genteel savouriness of a Syrah. Ancient soil plays a pivotal role in the wines’ ability to express the essence of a place, and the decision of blending regions presents a multi-layered wine, executed with flair and finesse.
In the glass, the wine introduces itself with delicate notes of potpourri, violets, and sandalwood, balanced with the comforting aroma of cranberry shortbread and warm French patisserie. The palate is a vibrant expression of young plum, red currants, cherry, and dried fig with a subtle savoury edge of thyme and cedar. The wine was aged in large Foudre and older oak barrels which complements the fruit as well as adding a textured mid-palate. This is a beautifully executed wine that honours both the Old and New World.

This is a powerhouse of a wine, the 4 grape varieties are united in an intriguing and authoritative wine that casts a net of attractive aromas to reel you in. Its hedonistic charm of plum, mulberry, cassis, and blackberry is underpinned with masculine notes of English leather, cedar, tobacco, truffle, and cured meat. The palate is delicious and mouth-filling.
This suave Cabernet Sauvignon-driven blend is undoubtedly intended to set sail for a long-lived journey and beckons those in search of a focussed and multi-faceted wine. Adorning this solid backbone, Merlot contributes with lively red fruit and a cool note of fennel that resurfaces as the wine develops in the glass. This 2019 Classic Blend is a collaboration between Harry Hartman and Tongai Joseph Dhafana, a refugee who turned winemaker, an award-winning Sommelier, a wine judge, a philanthropist and the proud owner of the internationally recognised Mosi Wines and Spirits.
In the glass, the wine unleashes a refreshing fragrance born from sun-baked-slate, ripe berry fruit, and a peppery perfume of lavender. The wine is packed with dark fruit like blackberry, mulberry, and plum, with a cool, herbaceous gloss. Hints of rum and raisin positively points to full ripeness, joined by a notable yet balanced alcohol adding to the full, rounded texture of the wine. Clever use of oak adds structure while honouring the fruit, affirmed with a mellow and gentle pull of berry compote. Garigue aromas persist on the palate, edged with fresh acidity and supple tannin for a mouth-watering finish. A coolness lingers on the palate with a gentler aftertaste of dark, sea salt chocolate. 2018 South Coast Pinot Noir, Lismore

This wine was made from Pinot Noir from 2 regions, 70% of the grapes came from Stanford, Walker Bay and 30% from Elgin, both in the cool climate region Cape South Coast. The vines are all Burgundian, clone 115. The Stanford vineyard is close to the southernmost tip of Africa and is located in one of South Africa’s coolest wine-producing regions. The maritime vineyard enjoys a long ripening season, because of the strong cooling winds that are prevalent in the summer. This microclimate is ideal for creating a long hang time, concentrating the flavours in the berries while retaining natural acidity levels. Elgin is situated at 400 metres above sea level and ripens even later than the coastal vineyard. The vines here, planted in shale and clay soils, produce fleshier fruit, adding weight to the blend.

The grapes come from five small vineyard parcels in several locations in the Elgin Valley. The region is surrounded by mountains and lies just over six miles from the Atlantic Ocean, which brings occasional sea-borne mists. February is the hottest month of the year, with daytime temperatures peaking at 23°C and night-time temperatures dipping to 14°C. The benefit of this cooler climate is that the grape cluster stays connected to its roots for longer, so it develops complex characteristics and achieves physiological ripeness more gradually, resulting in lower sugar levels and consequently lower alcohol levels.

The Estate specialises in producing highly individual, terroir-driven Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which are widely regarded as the best in South Africa and among the best in the New World.
‘The wine is very rich and intense on the nose, brimming with dried rose petals, lavender, cherry blossom and dried thyme and oregano herbs. The palate is super concentrated with sweet black cherry, graphite spice and grey slatey gravelly minerality. While this wine has more concentration than previous vintages, it also has restraint and dusty structured tannins that add a beautiful frame from which to hang the complex fruit adornments. There is a real gravitas, complexity and textured layers to this very ‘grown up’ wine. The finish is long and precise and just when you think the last word will be left on a mineral note, a burst of pithy juicy stony red cherry fruit kicks in to tantalise the palate. The G.P.S. (Grape Positioning System) series is made from exciting small parcels of fruit selected from carefully chosen vineyards outside the Elgin Valley. This Pinot Noir comes from two small parcels grown in a protected lee of the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, a cool climate area renowned for Pinot Noir. Bordered by the Babylonstoren Mountains to the north and the Kleinrivier Mountains to the south, clouds are trapped by the surrounding mountains, retaining cool air and moisture into the valley. The area is also influenced by the Antarctic Benguela current from the Atlantic Ocean, which brings cooling breezes, resulting in cool average summer temperatures. The long hang time builds complex characters with balancing acidity.
From the Winemaker: During the year, I have the opportunity to visit a number of areas outside of Elgin. Occasionally, I come across something so fascinating it deserves a closer look. In 2018, I discovered two small parcels of Pinot Noir grapes grown on Bokkeveld Shale in a protected lee of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley – an area renowned for Pinot Noir. It made sense to grasp the opportunity with both hands and the GPS Series is a testament to those special places.
