  Everyone loves Pinot Noir: It’s aromatic, supple, brightly fruited, and versatile. But, most of the time, it is also expensive. Here are some Pinot Noir bargains that are firm favourites with us because of their diversity and drinkability.

  Pinot noir is widely planted and appears in nearly all winegrowing regions of the world, and given the grape varieties’ preference for cooler climates and poorer soils, we leaned toward lesser-known regions in both Hemispheres with those characteristics.

  2020 Cruel Mistress Pinot Noir, Larry Cherubino, Great Southern, Western Australia

  This gorgeous Pinot Noir from Larry Cherubino is made with fruit from the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The nose shows graphite and minerals, juicy black cherries with a hint of spicy oak plays a supporting role. The palate is softly textured, fresh and vibrant, the flavours of black cherry and earthy beetroot carried along by a fine acid finish.

  Californian Samantha O’Keefe has found paradise and the perfect terroir. Tucked into the foothills of a dramatic mountain range at the bottom of Africa, Lismore Estate Vineyards was born alongside her nascent family. A passionate vision, combined with vines planted at 300 metres, which are chilled by winter snow and nourished by the African summer sun, produces classic, cool climate wines which are rich, complex and lovingly hand-crafted. This 2018 is an elegant Pinot Noir delivering a complex bouquet of crushed rose petals, wild jasmine and fresh French herbs.   One of the greatest producers in Southern Burgundy, the Joblot family has been producing fine wines for over four generations. These sought after wines have limited availability. L’Empreinte means ‘Footprint’ in French and this cuvée is the result of the best parcels of Domaine Joblot’s four Givry 1er Cru vineyards: Clos Maroles, Clos Du Cellier Aux Moines , Bois Chevaux and clos de la Servoisine.

  Simpsons’ Q Class Pinot Noir will only be produced in remarkable years, in order to showcase the Simpsons’ hallmark of quality, luxury and finesse.  Limited to 1000 bottles.  The Q Class wines are named after the Q Class engines which traversed the Canterbury to Folkestone light railway in the late 19th and early 20th Century.

  In the glass, it has an evocative bouquet of English hedgerow, from woodland bramble to delicate violet, rose and hints of cocoa, with warm earthiness, supple tannins, and notes of wild raspberry leading to a generous finish.

  2019 Pinot Noir ‘MCM88’, Senses

  A rich, concentrated Pinot Noir with aromas of black raspberries and pomegranate layered with hints of lavender, rose oil and wild sage. Black fruits and mineral notes lead to an earthy finish with a floral lift.

  The grapes for the MCM88 come from the famed vineyard formerly known as Keefer Ranch, which produces an exuberant single vineyard Pinot Noir, from the block originally farmed by Kosta Browne. The grapes come from a very special block, now known as Perry Ranch, which produces a bold style of Pinot Noir with great concentration and richness.

  2019 stands out as one of the more exceptional vintages in recent memory. Cooler temperatures and stable weather throughout the growing season allowed for slow maturation of flavours without any heat events spiking sugar accumulation in the berries. Although 2019 also saw the devastating Kincade fire in Sonoma County, the fruit was harvested by then, so the smoke did not affect the grapes.

  A Magnum of Rosé Solera Champagne, Champagne Palmer & Co

  An irresistible rosé Champagne combining great precision, freshness and fullness with charming aromas of wild strawberries, red and black currants, along with beautiful hints of vanilla and cinnamon spice.

  This rosé Champagne was produced using the solera method. Palmer & Co is one of the rare champagne houses to have adapted this well-known technique, often used for Spanish wines, for the creation of its champagnes. Each year, Palmer & Co adds red wines from the new harvest, which have been barrel-aged and typically amounts to 6-7%, to compensate for the wine drawn off. This perpetual reserve was started 40 years ago and is kept in stainless steel tanks. It forms an extraordinary library expressing a unique combination of red fruit and spice aromas and flavours. This rosé Champagne was then bottle-aged for two to three years on the lees, in the 18-metre- deep chalk cellars which imbues the wine with incredible complexity.

  Time is integral to all exceptional wine, but it is the critical component in Henri Giraud’s PR 90-19. Drawing inspiration from philosophy and physics, the “Perpetual Reserve” is a voyage through Henri Giraud’s vintage history.

  The imagery on the bottle offers a metaphysical nod to the role of time in every aspect of this wine. The design features a stylised equation symbolising the compression of time and space, representing the span of vintages and spatial distances captured in this single cuvée.

  100% solera-based, PR 90-20 is an 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay blend. 1/3 Grand Cru reserve wine from the solera started in 1990, which is designated for Giraud’s MV Fût de Chène, and 2/3 would be from an older “Esprit Nature” solera dating to the 1950s.

  In the glass, PR 90-20 from Champagne Henri Giraud reveals a luminous golden hue with fine, persistent bubbles. The nose is expressive and complex, unfolding layers of grapefruit zest, ripe pear, white flowers, and toasted brioche, interwoven with subtle hints of spice, chalk, and orange peel.   Champagne Collet, established in 1921 as part of the oldest Champagne cooperative in the Grand Cru village of Aÿ, is proud to celebrate its 100-year anniversary. To celebrate its centenary, Champagne Collet has made a commemorative bottling called “Cuvée n°21”. It is a blend of 21 of the Champagne House’s best years dating back to 1961. Aged for 7 years in Collet’s century-old chalk cellars, this wine is exclusively sourced from the Grand Cru and Premier Cru villages of Cramant, Ambonnay, Mailly, Avize, Hautvillers, Villers Marmery, Vertus, Verzenay and Chouilly. This one-of-a-kind Champagne was made in very limited quantity and will never be seen again.

  Disgorged and blended in 2021 this rare Champagne is comprised of the 21 best vintage which includes: 1961, 1969 1971, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, & 2012.

  Refined bouquet of fresh honeysuckle, buttered toast and almonds. Incredible aged characteristics in this blend. Tiny, delicate bubbles with rich and decadent flavours of caramel, roasted nuts, nectarine and candied ginger. A very long, elegant and silky Champagne.

  A magnificent aged magnum of Pinot Noir from an Iconic cool climate Estate in the Mornington Peninsula.

  The Paringa team is confident the 2016 reds will be regarded amongst the Paringa greats. A hot weekend, then a week of solid rains in early March was followed by somewhat of an Indian summer. Pinot Noir yields in 2016 were down 20 – 30%, but resulted in great concentrated flavour & excellent overall quality. In the winery berries were de-stemmed (100%) and fermented in two-tonne open fermenters. Maturation took place over 11 months on lees in French Oak barrels (50% new). This wine has complex lifted aromas of red fruit / dark cherries supported by spicy savoury oak. The palate has attractive spicy dark cherry flavours, fine grained tannins that combine to produce a lovely textural mouthful. The poise & balance of this wine make it one of the best Paringa Pinots made in recent time.

  The vineyard is set in the classic cool climate subregion of Red Hill at an altitude of 146 metres above sea level. The Pinot Noir vines are aged between 20 and 30 years; six clones are planted each with subtle characteristics which impart complexity to the resulting wine. The soil is a deep red volcanic clay that allows dry farming, without irrigation. Founder, Lindsay McCall, still tends to the vineyard characterised by its distinctive Lyre or ‘U’ trellis system which sits on an elaborate steel frame assembly.

  2019 Pinot Noir ‘Day One’, Senses

  Classic aromas of mulled red and black fruits, forest floor, conifer, and spiced orange carry through to a velvety palate showing wonderful purity of fruit, a precise texture and supreme balance.

  The fruit comes from the Hillcrest Vineyard, a single vineyard site purchased by Myles’ parents, Carleton Briggs and Lisa Lawrence in 1988. Located just outside of Occidental, this site borders the Charles Heintz Vineyard to the west and is home to the original Chardonnay planting in the West Sonoma Coast. It has however since been replanted to Pinot Noir, which thrives in the warm microclimate which is tempered by the cool, coastal breezes and the trademark fog that lingers over the vineyards, bringing moisture and cooling the vines. The result is a long hang-time, during which the vines slowly build aromatic complexity, concentrated flavours, superbly balanced by natural, acidity.
