2019 Pinot Noir, Te Muna Road Vineyard, Craggy Range

    £2995

A fine, ethereal Pinot Noir with evocative notes of lavender, jasmine, sweet spice underpinned by ripe, red-berried fruits. The silky tannins enhance the flow through to a supremely elegant finish.

The grapes come from the Te Muna Road vineyard in Wairarapa subregion of Martinborough, in the southeastern corner of the North Island. The vineyard consists of two distinct terraces, the upper terrace comprising very old, stony clay-infused soils perfect for Pinot Noir. The cooler climate of Martinborough ensures the wine is aromatic with steely minerality while the rocky soils impart intensity of fruit. The region’s warm, dry summers and mild winters lead to complex and structured wines with subtle aromatics and an elegant finish.

This 2022 Bourgogne Rouge “Cuvée Maison Dieu” is a lieu-dit (named site) in the village of Pommard and as such is a declassified Pommard!  Indeed the vines are just under those of the famous Château de Pommard.  This all bodes well for what the wine is actually like in the glass…..  It has a generous bouquet with red cherries and raspberry fruit. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, crunchy red fruit.   This wine will be brilliant with dishes such as roast chicken, chicken tagine with olives, coq au vin, beef fillet with Morel or Porcini mushrooms, veal chops and hard cheeses.

Rosé Solera Champagne, Champagne Palmer & Co – HALF Bottle

Palmer & Co is one of the rare champagne houses to have adapted this well-known technique, often used for Spanish wines, for the creation of its champagnes. Each year, Palmer & Co adds red wines from the new harvest, which have been barrel-aged and typically amounts to 6-7%, to compensate for the wine drawn off. This perpetual reserve was started 40 years ago and is kept in stainless steel tanks. It forms an extraordinary library expressing a unique combination of red fruit and spice aromas and flavours. This rosé Champagne was then bottle-aged for two to three years on the lees, in the 18-metre- deep chalk cellars which imbues the wine with incredible complexity.

The vineyards are surrounded by mountains to the west, whose seaward slopes are rainforest, receiving 5,000mm of rain per annum. Situated between these extremes, lay the Rockburn vineyards, which are producing Pinot Noir of stunning quality.

    2020 Pinot Noir, Pegasus Bay

    £3600

The 2020 Pinot Noir from Pegasus Bay is crafted by one of New Zealand’s most respected family-owned estates. Established in 1986 by Ivan and Christine Donaldson, Pegasus Bay has become a cornerstone of North Canterbury winemaking. With deep roots in the Waipara Valley and over four decades of family commitment, the Donaldsons have cultivated a unique estate focused on producing wines of authenticity, complexity, and longevity. Their mature, own-rooted vines grow on free-draining, north-facing terraces composed of the ancient Glasnevin Gravels, a mixture of greywacke, silt, and loam, yielding low-vigour vines and intensely flavoured fruit. A long growing season, thanks to warm days and cool nights, draws out ripening while preserving bright natural acidity.

The 2020 Pinot Noir is an elegant and powerful wine, with a bouquet that is both aromatic and grounded. Earthy notes of forest floor, woodsmoke, truffle, and dried herbs weave around vibrant aromas of dark cherry, cranberry, crushed lavender, and exotic spice. On the palate, it opens with generous, ripe fruit before revealing its underlying structure, a broad yet silky texture framed by polished tannins and a lively acid line. There’s a dynamic tension between freshness and richness, giving the wine energy and drive, while a savoury core and hints of clove, potpourri, and spice add further intrigue.

Regarded as one of the great New Zealand Pinot Noirs.

2018 South Coast Pinot Noir, Lismore

    £3800

An elegant Pinot Noir delivering a complex bouquet of crushed rose petals, wild jasmine and fresh French herbs. The palate shows beautiful purity with layered red fruits, cranberry, raspberry, silky tannins and a long, savoury finish.

This wine was made from Pinot Noir from 2 regions, 70% of the grapes came from Stanford, Walker Bay and 30% from Elgin, both in the cool climate region Cape South Coast. The vines are all Burgundian, clone 115. The Stanford vineyard is close to the southernmost tip of Africa and is located in one of South Africa’s coolest wine-producing regions. The maritime vineyard enjoys a long ripening season, because of the strong cooling winds that are prevalent in the summer. This microclimate is ideal for creating a long hang time, concentrating the flavours in the berries while retaining natural acidity levels. Elgin is situated at 400 metres above sea level and ripens even later than the coastal vineyard. The vines here, planted in shale and clay soils, produce fleshier fruit, adding weight to the blend.
