    Valençay became an AOC appellation in 2003 and is situated in the eastern part of the Loire Valley, approximately 60 miles west of Sancerre. The terroir is characterised by clay, limestone and flinty soils which impart the distinctive mineral characters to the wine. The region is influenced by the northern, cool climate, resulting in lively wines from grapes with characteristic high levels of acidity. Domaine Minchin is certified by Haute Valeur Environmentale and the vineyards are managed according to a strict sustainable philosophy, known as la lutte raisonnée. The vineyard is planted with grass, and the soil is tilled and worked to ensure the health and vigour of the vine, while encouraging beneficial biodiversity.

    Nicknamed ‘Bob’ by her family (some of you may recognize the Blackadder reference), Bob Short for Kate is a tribute to Kate Glover, an amazing young drama teacher and Ben’s sister, who passed away in 2018. Ben explains that he has looked to produce a wine that characterises the honesty, purity and confidence of Kate. These are organic, Marlborough wines, reliant on selected blocks from the family’s vines and exceptional fruit selection.     This Sauvignon Blanc from Groot Constantia is consistently one of South Africa’s best and is highly awarded every year – indeed the 2019 vintage was named the Worlds Best Sauvignon Blanc at the 2020 International Wine Challenge.   The 2020 vintage has a very similar flavour profile and is another triumph from Groot Constantia.

    The wine shows great complexity on the nose, dominated by ripe fruit like white peach, passion fruit and guava with a distinct grassy, herbal undertone and a hint of lemon. The palate has intensity and length, balanced by fresh natural acidity.

    The vineyards for this wine are located on the eastern side of Table Mountain with a climate that is best described as Mediterranean – this coupled with cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean encourages balance and complexity in the grapes. The climate, combined with the cool southern slopes and deep mountain soils provide the ideal setting for the making of this top-quality wine.

Shaped by a slow convergence of tectonic plates, the Wairau Valley offers a veritable patchwork of contrasting soil types linking the Alps in the west with the Pacific Ocean in the east. The eastern flood plain soils are nutrient-rich silty loam, renowned for delivering Marlborough’s iconic tropical flavoured Sauvignon Blanc. In order to capture the maximum expression of regional characteristics, the pruning, irrigation and canopy management is dictated by each variety and by each block of land.

    An elegant Sauvignon Blanc with aromas of floral spice, cardamom and white pepper. Richly textured with generous notes of citrus and ripe nectarine through to the characteristic, lengthy mineral edge on the finish.

    The estate is positioned on the narrow Cape Peninsula, where the confluence of sea breezes from the cold Atlantic Ocean, less than one mile away, and the southeasterly breezes from False Bay, create ideal conditions for the slow ripening of grapes. The grapes for this wine are hand-selected from three sea-facing vineyard parcels in the mid-levels of the estate, where a combination of the fresh breezes and decomposed granite soils result in a wine with a distinct mineral edge. The breezes, along with good canopy management, help to keep the vines healthy and diseases at bay, reducing the need for treatments. When the winds are strong, they also control the vine’s vigour and encourage a second suckering. The topography of the Noordhoek amphitheatre is also influential. It was carved from the Silvermine mountain over time, and as a result the soils of the estate vineyards are rich with decomposed granite, limestone and kaolin, imbuing the wines with their signature mineral quality.
