This Sauvignon Blanc from Groot Constantia is consistently one of South Africa’s best and is highly awarded every year – indeed the 2019 vintage was named the Worlds Best Sauvignon Blanc at the 2020 International Wine Challenge. The 2020 vintage has a very similar flavour profile and is another triumph from Groot Constantia.
The wine shows great complexity on the nose, dominated by ripe fruit like white peach, passion fruit and guava with a distinct grassy, herbal undertone and a hint of lemon. The palate has intensity and length, balanced by fresh natural acidity.
The vineyards for this wine are located on the eastern side of Table Mountain with a climate that is best described as Mediterranean – this coupled with cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean encourages balance and complexity in the grapes. The vineyards are located on the steep valley on the eastern side of Table Mountain. The grapes come predominantly from a block that varies between 67 and 95 metres above sea level, on slopes that are south to southeast facing. The climate is Mediterranean with cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean encouraging balance and complexity in the grapes. The average rainfall is approximately 1,100mm per annum. The soils are Clovelly and Glenrosa- a gravelly soil with low fertility. The climate, combined with the cool southern slopes and deep mountain soils provide the ideal setting for the production of this top-quality wine.

The touch of red muscat gives the wine a beautiful amber colour. The nose of the 2018 Grand Constance shows an abundance of ripe and dried fruit, like crushed pineapple, apricot and raisins. The ageing in barrels adds some wood spice and a hint of honey to the wine. The dried fruit and honey follow on the palate, and a fresh acidity balances the sweetness.
The Muscat grapes are grown in a vineyard block right next to the famous Manor House, which is situated at 80 to 90 metres above sea level. The low yielding vines are planted on a south-east facing slope. The climate is Mediterranean with cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean encouraging balance and complexity in the grapes.
