  This 2015 Frankland River Cabernet Sauvignon is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes sourced from his Pedestal vineyard in Western Australia’s Wilyabrup region. Inky black, the wine has strong classic bay leaf and earthy cabernet tones. Very focused, mouth filling with very fine tannins. Oak is supporting the intense fruit.   Having celebrated their 100th year of trading in 2013, Barros Port is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious companies producing and trading in Port. Much of their success comes from Colheita Ports – old Tawnies from a single year matured in cask for a minimum period of seven years. Their expertise in Colheita Ports has established them as the stand out producer of this style. Barros leaves their Colheita Ports to mature in cask until being hand bottled to order. The loss of wine from evaporation (known as the ‘Angel’s Share’) is much higher in comparison to bottle ageing. It is a sacrifice they are willing to make and one that helps them achieve unsurpassed quality in their Colheita wines.

  This 1998 Colheita is exceptional.  In the glass, it has bright brown-tawny colour with slight reflexes of red. The wine reveals a rich and elegant nose, combining the dried fruits aromas with the aromatic wood notes. Soft and silky in the taste, full of ripe figs and sweet flavours. A sensation of depth, in an elegant and distinctive style.  Exceptional.

  A breath-taking Pinot Noir with extraordinary texture, elegance and poise. Classic aromas of red and dark cherries mingle with hints of spice. The palate is structured yet elegant with excellent fruit weight and firm tannins. The long, complex, savoury finish is characteristic of this excellent 2015 vintage.

  The vineyard is set in the classic cool climate subregion of Red Hill at an altitude of 146 metres above sea level. The Pinot Noir vines are aged between 15 and 22 years; six clones are planted each with subtle characteristics which impart complexity to the resulting wine. The soil is a deep red volcanic clay that allows dry farming, without irrigation. Founder, Lindsay McCall, still tends to the vineyard characterised by its distinctive Lyre or ‘U’ trellis system which sits on an elaborate steel frame assembly.

  The Reserve range continues to be the best of what Xanadu are able to produce in a given vintage – single vineyard or otherwise. Fruit was predominantly sourced from two mature, dry grown vineyards; Timber Creek, in the Wilyabrup subregion; and Victory Point in the Treeton subregion of Margaret River and was supplemented with a small amount of Malbec from the Stevens Road vineyard in Wallcliffe. The resulting blend from these vineyards has married beautifully, proving again that sometimes ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’.

  The bouquet of this powerful, yet elegant Chardonnay displays fresh pear and lemon/lime characters with underlying hints of roasted cashews and frangipani adding complexity.  The sophisticated palate is medium-bodied with a wonderful purity of fruit, offering pear puree, zesty grapefruit flavours and a quartz-like, almost crystalline, mineral edge to the structure.   Barbaresco Martinenga takes its name from Marchesi di Grésy’s Martinenga vineyard situated in the commune of Barbaresco. This single-vineyard (of 11.93ha) has the shape of an amphitheatre, with Asili to the west and Rabaja to the north-east. These south-southwest facing vineyards have a favourable microclimate, which allows the production of high-quality grapes even in potentially difficult vintages.

  ‘Rose petals, violets and dark red cherries emerge from the 2010 Barbaresco Martinenga. In 2010 the Martinenga is quite supple, open and generous, with a kick of acidity and brightness on the finish, both signatures of the year.   2015 ‘Cuvée Boz’, Blanc de Blancs, Sugrue

  This very limited production wine, Sugrue’s first Blanc de Blancs, is winemaker, Dermot’s tribute to his late brother Boz.  A complex and harmonious English sparkling wine, showing aromas of green apple and subtle hints of lemon thyme. Beautifully balanced and poised on the palate, which offers good weight and notes of citrus peel, orange zest and delicate hints of strawberry through to an elegant finish.

  The grapes come from the Jenkyn Place single vineyard, nestled in the Hampshire Downs. The vineyard covers five hectares of vines, on land that was previously used for cultivating hops. The vineyards sit on sheltered, chalky, south-facing slopes at 100 metres above sea level, with greensand soils over marlstone, making them ideal for growing the high-quality grapes. The greensand topsoil at Jenkyn Place is scattered with eroded fragments of chalk, creating a distinctive -and possible unique combination, which is beginning to be translated into the wines. Chalky soils are associated with more gently-fruited wines of notable finesse, while greensand soils deliver a rounder fruit profile.

  2018 Wolta Wolta Clare Valley Riesling, Loosen Barry

  The friendship between Ernst Loosen, of the Dr. Loosen Estate in Germany, and Peter Barry, of Jim Barry Wines, Australia, began in 1995 at the London Wine Fair. Forged out of mutual respect for the noble variety Riesling, this collaboration of ideas pays homage to the wine making techniques used by the Loosen family for generations, and the vineyard practices of the Barry family.

  The German-style Riesling made in Australia is called Wolta Wolta, (Aboriginal for ‘good water’) in honour of one the Barry family’s most significant and successful land purchases, which later became known as Lodge Hill. The Australian-style Riesling, made with grapes from the Erdener Treppchen Vineyard in Germany, is called Walhalla, (pronounced Valhalla) named after the majestic hall ruled over by Odin in Norse mythology.

  It was no simple task for an Australian winemaker to make a German-style Riesling and vice versa, but when each winemaker can draw on forty years of experience of their counterpart, the possibilities are genuinely intriguing, and even though Peter and Tom Barry were uncertain they could make such a different style of Riesling, they were delighted with the outcome.

  This project is not about sales. This is a project of passion, designed to test the skills, explore the possibilities, and hopefully, get people thinking about Riesling in a different way.

  2016 Côte-Rôtie, Blonde du Seigneur, Georges Vernay

  Although Domaine Georges Vernay has built its reputation around its excellent Condrieu white wines, its reds should not be neglected, especially ones from the Côte-Rôtie. From a 5 ha plot of vines, Vernay’s Côte-Rôtie is amongst the most exceptional wines from the same appellation. Thanks to a perfectly mastered elegant wine style, Christine Vernay successfully expresses the elegance and depth of syrah; never over maturing or over ageing.

  2016 has been hailed as one of the great vintages and only 1200 cases were made in 2016 of the Blonde du Seigneur, so demand is high.   In the glass this 2016 vintage is a dark deep wine offering a mineral nose with notes of smoke, black fruit, black olive, and pepper – always enhanced by a floral component. It is aromatic on the palate, with firm but smooth tannins, and a beautiful lingering finish. Its aromatic mouth, with well-built but smoothed tannins, continues in a beautiful final length. An immediate pleasure that slowly, over the years, grows to be the most typical expression of the Syrah from Cote-Rotie.

  2018 Condrieu ‘Les Terrasses de l’Empire’, Georges Vernay

  A benchmark Condrieu – pure peach and apricot aromas are lifted with hints of acacia flowers. Full and creamy with a distinctive mineral expression and a subtle Condrieu saline complexity supporting the ripe stone fruit flavours. This is a pure expression of a very fine Viognier.

  The grapes from this wine come from a patchwork of small plots covering four hectares in the lieu-dits of Sainte Agathe and La Caille located in the heart of Condrieu. The vines are planted on steep south-facing granite, biotite terraces where the use of machines is impossible; therefore the vineyard is maintained manually and sustainably, without the use of weed killers or insecticides. The average age of vines is 35 years.

  Château Batailley is one of the oldest Estates in Pauillac. Its name goes back to the last battle of the Hundred Years’ war in Medoc, which took place on the plateau that descends to Château Latour.

  A beautifully smooth and elegant wine showing classic notes of cedar, sweet blackcurrant, raspberry coulis and fruitcake with smoky nuances of tobacco and liquorice. Abundant sweet tannins and a good full-bodied structure surround the depth and complexity of flavours through to a long, harmonious finish.

  A Magnum of the iconic M3 Chardonnay from a high quality, low yielding vintage.  This wine opens with intense aromas of white flowers, nectarine and citrus. Aiming for elegance, restraint and the ability to age, the acidity is bright and there is generosity of flavour.

  Fruit was predominantly sourced from the Shaw + Smith vineyard at Lenswood, which was planted in 1999 and purchased by Martin and Michael in 2012. Undulating with east and west-facing aspects at 455 – 500 metres above sea level, the soils are brown loams over clay with broken shale on the ridges. Low yields were achieved by aggressive pruning and pre-harvest bunch thinning. All fruit was hand-picked to avoid any fruit damage.

  This outstanding Chardonnay from Richard Kershaw MW is sourced from a parcel in the western part of Elgin the CY95 in the wines name is in reference to a clone of the Chardonnay grape that is known for its excellent quality creating wines that are aromatic, fuller bodied and rich yet tightly structured, well–balanced with length of flavour, managing to show restraint and mouth-watering passivity with a great line through the palate and fruit veering towards white peach flesh and nectarine. The Bokkeveld Shale brings amplified perfume to the nose and persistence and elegance to the palate.

   Only 710 bottles were produced.
