  • 2020 Swartland Rouge, Kloof StreetRed Wine

    2020 Swartland Rouge, Kloof Street

    £1675

Produced by Chris and Andrea Mullineux, the Kloof Street wines represent balance, freshness and superb value. They act as the perfect starting point for discovering Swartland’s wines. It is immediately evident in the glass that as much care goes into these wines as Mullineux’s Single Terroir Syrahs and Chenin Blancs.

The spicy perfumed nose has undertones of dark fruits. Each variety in the blend adds balance to the wine. Tinta Barocca brings tannin, Cinsault brings perfume, Carignan brings freshness, Grenache brings fruit character, and the Syrah ties it all together.

A blend of eight vineyard parcels, this wine is made from sustainably farmed fruit sourced from different parts of the Swartland. The vines are aged between 12 – 40 years. Two parcels of Syrah and one of Cinsault come from the stony shale and schist-based soils of Kasteelberg, which retain heat well and aid in the ripening of bold fruit. One parcel of dry-land, bush vine Syrah, one of Carignan, one of Grenache and a single parcel of gnarly, old, dry-farmed Tinta Barocca bush vines are all grown on the decomposed granite soil of the Paardeberg. This soil promotes the production of complex wines with lifted acidity. The final parcel is Mourvèdre grown on the rolling, iron-rich soils west of Malmesbury.

The winding road leading to the plots of Syrah vines located on the terraces at the foot of La Livinière gave its name to this expressive wine.   In the glass La Rouge opens with aromas rich black fruits, smoke and cocoa. Inky purple in the glass the palate displays full-bodied richness, beautifully integrated acidity, juicy ripe tannins and no hard edges.

  • 2017 Zero Manipulation ‘Tollini Vineyard’, Peterson WineryRed Wine

2017 Zero Manipulation ‘Tollini Vineyard’, Peterson Winery

    £2150

This blend of Carignan, Grenache, Syrah (73%,22% and 5%) has inviting aromas of wild red fruits, hints of spice and a rustic minerality which leads to luscious layers of raspberry, strawberry, floral notes and pomegranate, surrounded by a subtle structure and a touch of liquorice on the finish.  Zero Manipulation is the winemaking philosophy that is employed on all Peterson wines, using the gentlest winemaking techniques possible to maximise flavours, aromas and the original essence of the grapes from the given vineyard and vintage.

The Tollini Vineyard is located in Mendocino County’s Redwood Valley and has been in the Tollini family for three generations; now in the hands of Alvin Tollini. The Zero Manipulation Blend is made up of predominantly Carignan, where the vines are traditionally head trained and dry farmed. The blocks were originally planted by Alvin Tollini’s father and grandfather and old-vine, low yielding Carignan remains from the original plantings and produces concentrated, flavoursome fruit. Alvin’s father added to the acreage after he returned from WWII. The Syrah and Grenache were planted by Alvin using the same time-honoured techniques and sustainable approach and they add layers of depth, complexity and balance to the blend. The vines are planted on southwest facing benches in the Redwood Valley and are cultivated with a meticulously sustainable approach.

  • 2017 Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel, Peterson WineryRed Wine

2017 Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel, Peterson Winery

    £2695

This wine is primarily made with Zinfandel with a little dollop of Petite Sirah, Carignan and Grenache.

The subtle berry and toasty oak aromas belie the delicious, mouth-coating flavours that follow. The luscious fruit is seamlessly balanced by the oak and restrained tannic structure, though to a long, seductive finish.

The Dry Creek blend, is a wine which reflects the overall Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel terroir, as opposed to a single-vineyard character. The grapes come from five carefully selected vineyards -Funsten, Bradford Mountain Estate, Bernier, Forchini, and the West vineyards, which are located throughout the appellation. Each vineyard has its distinctive soil type and microclimate, providing a cross-section of Dry Creek Valley typicity.

  • 2016 Zinfandel ‘Bradford Mountain Estate Vineyard’, Peterson WineryRed Wine

2016 Zinfandel ‘Bradford Mountain Estate Vineyard’, Peterson Winery

    £3295

This Mountain-grown Zinfandel opens in the glass with tempting notes of opulent dark berries, spicy black pepper and a rich mineral essence, underpinned by beautifully integrated oak nuances through to a long, elegant finish

The grapes are ‘Estate Grown’ from the Bradford Mountain Estate vineyard. Overlooking the western edge of Dry Creek Valley, the vineyard spans six and a half hectares on the very top of the 385-metre peak that Fred cleared and planted in the 1980s. The well-drained, red-clay soil, combined with sunny days and cool nights, produces small, intensely flavoured grapes. This wine encapsulates all of the best qualities found in mountain-grown Zinfandels from the Dry Creek Valley appellation: the poorer soils and cooler nights harness and preserve more of the bright acidity and freshness in the grapes. More sunlight hours at the higher elevation means thicker-skinned fruit which translates as darker, richer fruit. The key characteristics of mountain-grown Zinfandel are that it has a peppery quality and more intense black fruit characteristics.
